The main allen bolt on the drive side came undone three times on my one hour commute this morning.

verdict: shagged or repairable

On drive side, have a look in inside of spider and you'll see spacers, 1 red and maybe 2 black. You can remove either or both which will help.

Ouch, I've had this with RaceFace cranks myself, I tried all sorts of things to fix it but ultimately it reached the point where the cranks would loosen themselves after a three hundred yard pootle. Although I realise that the cause was probably me not torquing them up "Bastard Tight" a set of eighteen month old cranks lunching themselves to the extent that the drive side spline interface was ronnied after a couple of rides put me off RaceFace products ever since.

You could try removing spacers, but if your crank is loosening to that extent in one ride then you've probably got the same problem with the spline interface as I had. My honest answer is that I switched to Shimano cranks and have never looked back since.

thanks guys - just glad I had the appropriate key with me on the way in.

I'll limp home, stopping a few times & see the damage later.

they are a good few years old, second hand to me & 6000km old to me, so they have not too bad I suppose.

I had this on my Next SLs - it was because the ring used for applying bearing tension was too far out, meaning that although the crank arm was bolted on and the torque was high, the crank hadn't gone far enough on. Try putting the adjuster all the way in and tightening the crank again. After that mine haven't come loose again.

hmmm - must be something else on mine - as I have not touched them for a good wee while - perhaps too long !

perhaps I just need a new bike.
