Trying to get an old bike back up and running.
It has RaceFace Atlas Freeride double crankset from 2012 and the original X-Type Bottom Bracket.
The Bottom Bracket is totally shot and most of the markings have worn off.
I was told it would work with a Shimano Hollowtec 2, however it would seem the axel is too wide. Been looking around for a replacement Bottom bracket, but cannot figure out what I need.

Any ideas?

Thanks

X-Type and Hollowtech should work together - might be some top hat spacers or similar interfering

Yeah X-type was supposed to be the same dimensions as Shimano HT2 when I had it.

BUT - with more recent RF cranks I've found they're just slightly too girthy to fit through Shimano BBs properly - so I'm not surprised you've finding the same.

Probably trial and error finding a BB that does fit. Though why not take the opportunity to switch to a new SLX chainset, they are brill.

What do you mean by "too wide"? Is it that the axle diameter is too large, or that the length of the axle is too long meaning the crank can slide from side to side?

If the latter, then by how much? The original setup was sized with a selection of spacers added to the axle to take up the slack.

If its pushing the sleeve out of the BB it can be gently tapped back in once the axle is through the BB. Copious greasing helps too.

I was going to say this.

You need a selection of 1mm shims (that sounds lthick, they might have been thinner) and a 2.5mm X-ring which acts as a spring.

Install the crank with the x-ring (it presses into a recess in the crank arm), guestimate the space left, add that many spaces, repeat if there's still a space, or take one out if not. Until the space is just filled.

i have some of the shims for Raceface cranks in the spares if you need some. There's different colours/types too

Thanks for the suggestions. Sorry should have been more specific, its the diameter of the axel as apposed to the length. Its just occurred to me that it might be a Tiagre or 105 HT2 that I have tried to use. I will check later. Would the Road axel be a smaller diameter?

No I think they're all the same?

If the axle is steel it might need a good rub with wire wool to remove any surface rust which would stop it passing through the plastic top hats.

Pretty sure I had an Hone, XT or SLX on my old Atlas cranks once the RF one died
