Dies anyone have any experience of fitting SKS race blades to a Specialized Tarmac or similar bike with limited front clearance? I've got the back one on no problems but there is so little clearance between the tyre and downtube at the front that I can't fit it without it either clashing. This is what it currently looks like (it's sat on the tyre at this point)

Are there any other clip in guards that don't require as much space?

Also, went out yesterday, the back one kept me dry but didn't do much for the guy behind me!

Company called qbicle, sigma do them, that fits on the qr. Might be slightly more slimline than the race blade.

You could buy yourself a few mm by grinding off some plastic covering the metal bars where it goes over the mud guard, but basically that frame isn't designed to take mud guards.

Yeah, was thinking of doing that but was also thinking of just selling them on as they are basically brand new and getting something that might fit better.
I have another bike which is all guarded up for commuting a etc. I just thought it would be nice on days like yesterday to have a bit of extra protection and also to help shield others when I'm a group ride (post restrictions etc.) Never mind

Cheers, will have a look albeit I have thru axles so doubt they will fit. Bike came from Sigma, might just give them a bell and see what they say

Ah only works on qr, don't think you could reverse engineer a thru axle work around.

Clocks have gone back - mudguards on for group rides. Sounds like n+1 is required if the commuter isn't suitable

My commuter is also my gravel bike. I do technically have a spare set of wheels which I could chuck some road tires on but it's getting a bit tired and I like having nice smooth gears and hydraulic discs.actually have my eye on a new gravel/do it all bike bit waiting for stuff to come back in stock

Riding a Tarmac isn't fair when all your mates will be on crappy old aluminium winter bikes with a kilogram of SKS guards and heavy winter tyres*.

* I wish. At my old club in St Albans I joked about people having a summer Cervelo and a winter Cervelo. Bit better where I am 'oop norf currently, but carbon pseudo-winter bikes are definitely in the majority now.

Yep, looking to get some new 50mm carbon wheels for my winter bike 😉

Done the whole winter training on a steel fixie and basically can't be arsed, I want a deep section wheeled carbon race machine (with mudguards) for winter, running on GP5000s with latex inner tubes. Anything else just won't do.

I do feel slightly sorry for the one or two who do turn up on a 50lb steel bike, as they get dropped on every hill.....

Haha, this is my road bike, my gravel bike is a planet X London road, 5 years old and beginning to feel it. At the end of the day, I bought the tarmac (the cheapest one they do) to ride, and whilst I see the logic in having a winter and a summer bike, I bought it to enjoy and I don't ride enough in either season to justify the purchase to only ride it half the year. No judgement if you have seasonal bike btw!

What about an ass saver speed mullet?

No idea if they're effective, I've just seen a picture of one.

That would be assuming the Tarmac wasn't masking a complete lack of fitness or power

Slight drift but I just put Raceguard XLs on my carbon Defy. It has carbon tubeless Zipps and as they have brass nipples I don't see the point in running cheap wheels for the winter or am I missing something? The Zipps are so nice to ride I can't face putting shit wheels on

Also it was bloody windy out yesterday and over the top of the downs it was a real struggle stop the front wheel getting snatched away and I didn't dare take a hand off the bars for fear of doing a Froome! Anyone only run a rear guard when it's windy?

I use crud road racers. I’ll probably get flamed here but I think they are better in every way. They stay in place, once the Velcro is attached they are easy to remove and install, they look better and have more clearance. And I’m also on a tarmac

@claudie interesting... What model tarmac? Mine is an SL6. Spotted them on line and wasn't sure I wanted velcro attached to the bike permanently but maybe I'll give them a second look. Cheers

Sl5 disc, and I have tubeless GP5000 25mm. The Velcro has been on for three years and I think it comes off with a hair dryer but I’ve never tried. Make sure you clean the surfaces very well with isopropyl or the Velcro will lift.

Primoplastics? Although Google seems to show they've changed the design to something more like SKS which is a shame as the whole benefit of them was they were so much less fiddly!

Thanks TINAS, probably should have said at the beginning that I'm on a Tarmac SL6 disc so not caliper mounts, no fork mounts and have thru axles so I don't think they'll work. I'm coming around to the fact there just isn't enough space and I just need to invest in some darker clothes and better glasses 😉

I leave the front off, it isn’t just the issue of fork/ tyre clearance, but also foot front tyre clearance. There may well be no clearance. So if not paying full attention serious risk of feet catching the mudguard.
