I Read Hannah’s newsletter about socks and just wanted to share my preference after 30+ years of cycling.
I used to buy cheap socks and had some pairs in expensive(ish) cycling socks but none of them ever lasted. About three years ago I got a free pair of Stance socks sent to me after doing some Red Bull challenge on Strava. These were a revelation!
They were really comfy, they were crew length which is longer than I used to wear and I still wear them regularly.
The most amazing thing and what I thought was going to be impossible (I’d never had socks without holes) I thought this not possible, is that there is no sign of holes in the heal or toes, or anywhere else. I since bought a bunch more pairs with what they call Infiniknit this guarantees them for life against holes and wear and will be replaced for free. They have an insane number of designs lots of different sizes and lengths. Just make sure to go for the lifetime guarantee ones. Far more cost effective and environmentally friendly spending a tenner on something that lasts a lifetime rather than buying a new pair of socks every month. Here’s a link hope it helps someone!

A very timely thread, what with Xmas just round the corner, and the fact I have been debating starting a sock thread for the last couple of months! Thank you for sharing your tip. I may well give them a go as the unicorn sock is one I have searched for, forever. I think I now have my own personal favourites, but they only come in one colour so something with a bit more choice would be nice. My goto sock is the Tuffstuff work sock. I can wear them all year round on the farm with the exception of the odd very cold winters day. I also wear them for all MTB activity too. No special socks for me any more. They seem to be indestructible, don't slip, keep their shape, and best of all they slip on your feet fresh from the wash as easy as one that has already been worn. Man I hate fighting with freshly washed socks that have shrunk and need stretching to get on. I guess one benefit of anly one design is that having now bought 12 pairs of them, I never have to search for the odd sock to make up a pair after the wash. 🙂

Random link to a seller of these socks....

Darn tough, the original sock-for-life, currently on massive discount at that red referral discount website. Genuinely brilliant socks. When they wear out, just take them into any outdoor shop that sells Darn Tough and they give you another pair. No posting, no stress.

I only wish they did toe socks for running.

I have a pair of Darn Tough socks for winter, but find they suffer from the post-wash shrinkage issue which makes them a PITA to get on first time. Not a deal breaker as I agree they are a good sock. But they are not the unicorn sock I think we are all searching for. Plus they are too expensive to be an all day everyday sock in my view.

Having good success and longevity from oddballs socks.

Worst socks ever were fancy sockguy socks had 5 pairs bought on a multi purchase deal. Seemed to last about 1 ride each.

There’s a non-woolly Sock Guy sock that’s pretty close to perfect, but I can only find them with unicorns on, which makes them less attractive!

The best socks I've had were Save Our Soles which on one had for sale years ago. Not very thick but very hard wearing.

I’ve got some woolly stance ones have kept my feet fairly warm and the design is pretty plain. Thanks for the other links to socks I’d not heard of. It’s always good to have more options.

I bought 12 pairs of Ulvang Spesial merino ones after an eBay PSA on here about 6-7 years ago. They were about £2 a pair.

They are they best socks I've ever owned, and those that haven't been lost are still worn every day as regular socks, for running, MTB or road commuting. I usually get through two pairs a day, so each pair must have gone though a wash/dry cycle 350-400 times, and they are still great.

I've been hoping to stock up again ever since the original PSA, but hasn't found them at decent discount, but I noticed some in stock on Alpinetrek for about £8 a pair. I've bought enough to do me for another few years.

If you suffer from cold feet like I do don’t bother with Madison Extreme Winter socks 🙄

I've still a couple of pairs of these too. They look an absolute mess with bobbles and they seem especially attracted to hair, but they are intact and still warm.

My own indestructible sock is a pair of Thor los, which must be over 25 yrs old now, originally only worn for going walking they get used for autumn and winter wear now. I'll be sad to see them go. I wonder if they still make them as good as they did.

I was in the same thought process as Charliedontsurf, - all my socks were the same, easy to match a pair up (even in the dark). I then got bought some warm socks for working outdoors in the winter. I then bought some waterproof socks for cycling in the wet scottish days, then got some merino socks for the in-between days (these are good to put on to put you in the frame of mind to go out on the days you feel a bit 'meh, can't be bothered' ). All are good in their own way/for their own use, but some days I wish I could go back to the simpler days of just grabbing any pair - they're all the same.

It's a slippery slope this sock game
