I'm sure it's somewhere on the web, but I wanted some real world views... my boardman is BB30 and the bearings are beyond dead. So I wanted to stick my Tempest on my new Direto until I can get/fit some new bearings.

It's in Bike Packing mode and has a wopping 46T cassette on the back. I know my flux was 32 Max so I assume the 46 is a no go on the Elite?

Presumably the issue is physical clearance and mostly whether the rear mech cage will foul anything at the big end of the cassette?

I suspect the only way you'll find out is by trying it for yourself - no self-respecting roadie would be running a dinner plate on an indoor trainer 😉

He observed, unhelpfully 🙂

Thanks Jon. I'm not any kind of roadie, never mind self respecting! I am also not very patient 😉 I'll give it a try. I know the issue with the flux was clearance for the mech on the big cogs.

Oh and option c) - can I use a Shimano 11 speed cassette with SRAM shifters?

There'll be a bike-packing route on Zwift before long. You'll be able to load up with luggage in the Zwift Garage and trundle relentlessly across Watopia setting up virtual tarps in scenic spots and upgrading to ever lighter, more expensive kit. It's just a matter of time.

That sounds like a really crap version of secondlife 🙂

Crap? Don't know what you mean... You'll be able to do fire-lit group bivvies with your virtual pals. You might need a real hip-flask and weird dehydrated meals mind and a hose to simulate overnight showers, but mostly it'll be a low hassle way of connection with the virtual wilderness. Then you can wake at dawn, snaffle some gourmet coffee bags and jump back on your turbo. What's not to like. Imagine the snoring sound effects in Zwift world, just ace 🙂

Oddly it reminds me of when we did bike-packing before it was a thing and ordered a curry delivery 'somewhere above Matlock Bath'. Comedy.

Now you're selling it 🙂 Level up to receive 'new beard and top-knot' pack. I think you're onto something there...

Just nip out and buy a bike for turbo trainer use only. I can't believe that this hasn't crossed your mind.

Surely you can just stick a bog standard cassette on it?

Iirc the gradient simulation in zwift can have a percentage applied, if you set it to 50% then it halves the gradient its simulaing (but your power still has to get you up the real gradient, your back wheel spins faster but the virtual one doesnt) so you use a higher gear. I.e. you can simulate a 11-46 cassette with an 11-23?

Dunno how well that would work with b-tension etc.

No doubt Wahoo will be busy developing the gadgets for this, including the overnight shower effects 🙂 FFS, they already do wind and incline simulators 😉

All the joys of bike-packing with none of the discomfort. What could go wrong. I'm already working with Wahoo on the new Wahoo Flickr, which is a simulated campfire module, the Wahoo Drippr - self explanatory I think - and other stuff which is still embargoed. Watch this space.

Rumours abound online about the Wahoo Piddlr - the simulator for taking a piss up against a tree. Not to mention the Wahoo Dumpr...

This post has gone exactly the way I’d hoped 😂

Don’t have a spare cassette. That’s the problem. Do have a ‘spare’ bike. It’s my old cross bike. Sadly it’s bb30 and the bearings are beyond dead.

Back on post...

As above, just give it a try.

So long as it spins, all good!

Why not stick the cassette from your Boardman onto the Direto?  The Direto is direct drive, so it either has a cassette on it, or you need to put one on there.  The cassette on your bike packing bike is irrelevant

Direto has Erg mode, stick it in a gear that works and leave it there, your training app will do the resistance changes for you - no need to change gear

105 5800 11-32 cassette with 105 5800 medium cage rear mech works, but it's a bit clumsy fitting or taking off (rear mech hits Direto chassis away from riding position).

Fix the cross bike, job done, Two birds, one stone 🙂

Chances of getting BB30 bearings on a Sunday.... anyway ordered some, bodged Tempest on their to test Direto. Worked well enough to know it seems to be acting in a non broken turbo way. That'll do until the replacement bearing arrive.

Oh I left my little 'fuel pod' on the top tube. Sadly I couldn't unlock the 'virtual bike-packing' route. I lay on the floor under a tarp for a bit to replicate the experience 🙂
