With a newborn and an 18 month old in the house, Mrs Doubleu wants to get back in the saddle. She wants to be able to hear the TV without causing herself, the neighbours or the kids permanent deafness.

If we're going to get a turbo trainer rather than rollers what would you recommend. Are the fluid rather than magnetic ones quieter (e.g. cycleops jet fluid pro)? Will we still need damping mat etc?

Cheers

Most of the noise from mine comes from the bike.

It's an older version of this: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/cycleops-mag-trainer/

Not silent, and i have to turn the volume on my computer up. But it is the only turbo i've used so can't comment on relative noise levels. It is certainly noisier before i've got up to speed, and the position on the floor influences it too.

I use an Elite turbo with a gel roller - I have the RealAxiom which isn't cheap but think the basic gel models will be similarly quiet.

Garage? Sort a TV on there, should be cooler too...

Just picked this up at the weekend.

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductMobileDisplay?catalogId=10151&storeId=10001&productId=974171&categoryId=229901&langId=-1

Mines in the garage on a thick mat (not the one that came with it) and the noise/drone is only an issue when performing the sprints at 35mph+

First trainer I've bought and easy to assemble and use.

I recently got a Minoura V150 off Merlin, they were doing them quite cheap. I used it back to back with a basic Tracx T2650 model and it is noticeably quieter. I use it in a flat so noise is quite important to me and it seems fine. It's no worse than the dishwasher or washing machine anyway.

I use a £10 yoga mat to put under it for damping, seems to help also.

That's a good point. In the winter it is unbearable to train inside with the heating on. Could be an issue with a baby in the house.

I have Cycleops Jet and it's a damn sight quieter (and better feel) than my previous magnetic elite. Good bit of kit

Another Cycleops Jet Fluid Pro user here and it's a lot quieter than some I have used/seen I can watch stuff on the laptop with the volume up but not excessive. Getting it on a good mat helps but being downstairs when it's on a wooden floor is unbearable.
