I own a Cannondale Topstone and the 2x9 Sora groupset is very rattly when going over rough ground, akin to a 2006 hardtail, and having become used to silent SRAM GX Eagle on my full suss, this noise is infuriating. Has anyone got any ideas to quieten this down? I've thought of the following which may work??

- sticky velcro on the chainstay and on the front mech to stop the chain rattling (not sure if this would be a bugger to clean or would interfere with the operation of the mech)

- Going 1x - but this may be a massive expense - albeit a £699 GRX groupset online is appealing but I think I would also need a new rear freehub to go 11 speed.

Anyone got any other ideas?

Thanks

Chainreaction sell the nice moulded rubber chainstay protectors for the various Nukeproof bikes pretty cheaply, it may be an option to pick one that looks suitable and trim to fit? They stick on with 3M tape and stay on nicely when washing etc. and some versions are only £6.99:

Also VHS (I think) sell essentially a rubber/mastic tape to make your own,

It's mainly gonna be the lack of a clutch on your mech, eh?

Is there a clutched mech which would be compatible with the shifters?

Even an MTB one with one of those widgets that changes the pull ratio.

Hmmm... I put a clutched ultegra r8000 RD on my Top Stone to use a 11-40t cassette, but that's 11 speed. Can you get any sort of clutched rd for 9 speed?

You won't need a new hub for 11speed, HG is HG.

But: +1 to "lack of clutch" and "lack of suspension".

My CX bike with 2 x 10 speed is totally silent over the rough stuff. Chain slap, rubberised chainstay protector. Anything else rattling like cables ?

You could try wrapping an old inner tube round the chainstay (wrap as if it was bar tape so you have plenty of thickness). See if that makes a difference.

I think 9spd Shimano MTB Mechs work on 9spd road shifters? Not sure if anything that age/spec would have a clutch though.

Your lack of clutch mech is one factor.

For your chainstay i'd highly recommend 3M 2228 Mastic tape. Some of the 'MTB specific' tapes are actually this

I've stuck on a small section to my gravel  bike chainstay  and it make a big difference to noise even with a clutch

Microshift have a 9spd rear mech with a clutch, but it has a different cable pull ratio than shimano

Is it internal cabling?  I had a problem with my mtb that was noisy over the rough stuff and it was actually the cables rattling around the frame inside.  All I had to to was pull them out a bit from the frame and the noise went away.  Took me a long time to find though 🙂

Thanks all - it looks as though some DIY frame protection may be the cheap way to try and fix the issue.

I don't think it is the internal cables as they are within a rubber sheath and this seems to deaden any noise.
