Off to our usual holiday jaunt shortly, BeaconHill, a few miles NW of Morpeth, for a week. Have been going to the area for last 10 years plus, so know it well, though never taken bikes. I'm wondering about popping the gravel bike on the roof this time for some early morning rides - any suggested nice 20 - 40 miles loops ?

Pretty well anything that isn't an A-road basically, especially away from the coast. Head up to Rothbury then towards Otterburn and back. Not done any road riding between the A1 and the coast south of Craster (well north) so can't help on that side.

great, thanks. The place we stay is up in the hills and in a myriad of narrow c roads so may just go in the general Rothbury direction and see what unfolds !

Nice area for the road bikes. Head west. Rothbury, Thropton, up Bilsmoor (lovely climb) Elsdon up Winters Gibbet and back via Netherwitton. Head towards Belsay if you want coffee and cake with flatter riding

With the gravel bike, you could head over to Simonside and ride through the forest and Harwood towards Winters Gibbet (or other way round might get you a descent through the forest

the rough area between say, Morpeth, Otterburn, Hexham, Ponteland and Morpeth is prime road riding territory, it's where you'll find most of the roadie clubs out on a sunday.

Lots of choice but you could, for example go west through Cambo > Bavington to Chollerford then east to Matfen > Stamfordham then towards Ogle, Whalton and back up to Longhorsley - if that's where you're based. That's more rolling country with some quiet lanes. Going north West gets you into more hills and I'm sure you could plot a gravel route around Simonside.
There's also some decent rides towards the coast if you go east towards Druridge then north to Amble, Warkworth etc and follow the coast and castles route.

here's a rough plot as a suggestion - that comes out as 55 miles but it's easy to cut or add on as you like. If you look at the OS map you'll see how many small roads there are to link up
Have a good holiday

I know exactly where you are - I've a very good friend lives in Pigdon and you're on the road circuit we run round sometimes.

It's probably quicker to say which roads to avoid - I'd say the A697 and the A1 and ...erm, that's about it. The road into Rothbury and over to Elsdon might be a bit 'motorbikey' if it's a sunny Saturday or Sunday afternoon but I wouldn't let that put me off.

Hilly to the North and West, flatter to the South and East. Interesting sustrans route that runs from Berwick to Bellingham and beyond (through Wark forest and south) if that's your thing, likewise a signed coastal route. Otherwise just enjoy it, those routes suggested will all be grand.

I think this loop would be nice on a gravel bike, going around Rothbury (call into Tomlinsons for a coffee) and a little sneak through Cragside.
Can easily be extended further up into the Coquet valley.

thanks all, joemmo, your route was stunning, though the wee link section down the west side of the A68, just north of Swinburn, was a 1/4 mile of very wet bog 🙂

Drac, we went to Caboose yesterday, I see what you meant 🙂

Family walk Craster, Dunstanburgh, Low Newton for a beer is on the cards for tomorrow, love this place !

Ah sorry... I didn't take the season into account - but probably better than the A68.. just. Glad you enjoyed the rest of it though!
