I want to get a few days road riding in the Alps this summer and it's looking like it will have to be late August.
I'd like to be somewhere proper Alps-y, with snow-capped rocky peaks and all that. I'm not too bothered about ticking off tour classics, but wouldn't necessarily avoid them either. But I'm thinking a lot of the roads might be very busy with traffic in August, so does anyone have any suggestions for anywhere a bit quieter?
At the moment I'm thinking of the Maurienne Valley, Barcelonnette, or a bit further afield around Innsbruck, or maybe Switzerland.
Any suggestions?

I'd say in general terms the Pyrenees are less busy than the Alps, but I imagine it's not too hard to find quiet climbs in either. Port de Balès, Superbagneres, col de menté, col d'azet are just a few that I know are lightly trafficked. Tourmalet, Peyresourde and Aspin are inevitably busier, but I've never felt like it detracts from the experience.
Could do worse than go see Dean at Pyractif and base yourself there - Ares, Bales, superbagneres, hospice, d’aspin and more all rideable from there
Would have said what 2 others have already said... it’s possible to ride Port de Bales in august and not see anyone
Barcelonnette is absolutely fantastic.
Loads of routes, quiet, well surfaced roads, massive cols. The town itself is lovely too.
