Howdy,

I've not long had my new commuter, a lovely Vitus Zebulun SL VR but I’ve had a couple of niggles.

The latest one I've noticed today is that when I unscrew my rear thru axle the bit where it threads into the frame (the bit the axle goes into) isn’t fixed to the frame at all, it just drops to the floor.

Is this normal? My Vitus Sentier has the same sizes axle but that is fixed to the frame. Wiggle tell me it shouldn’t be fixed, but it seems odd and makes replacing the wheel harder than it needs to be.

Thoughts?

Different axle system or dropout? The 142x12 Shimano axle on my mk1 Switchback is like this, it's basically just a nut and bolt but the Syntace one on my Cube threads into the dropout. The Syntace gubbins on the Cotic Flare and Rocket aren't fixed to the frame either, they can just pop out of the frame when the pinch bolt is undone which was a PITA.

It's normal, mine was 180 degrees out when I received the bike so when I tightened the axle the handle was pointing downwards

The syntace bits on both the rockets I've had have been attached to the frame!

On the Rocket the threaded bit just dropped out of its own free will. Same with the 650B BFes I've had too. They still worked ok but it was a PITA when I forgot about it... 😆

On mine it's held in by the pinch bolt that holds the mech hanger on.

Often there is a grub screw that holds it in place to stop it falling out.

The Syntace dropouts on Cotics - the "nut" bit is clamped in place by the mech hanger bolt. Both my X12 frames I had issues with the hanger coming loose until I threadlocked them in, so that's probably the root cause in that case.

Cheers all, I’ll have a look at it at the weekend, it’s fine when it’s bolted up, just don’t fancy scrabbling round for it by the A5 on a wet January night.
