Can anyone with a Spesh Allez, and around 5'7", let me know what size frame they use? I am thinking 54cm should be about right.

Cheers.

May be a bit on the big side, I'd try a 52 and a 54 if I were you.

I'm 5'10" and have a 56, but it's significantly bigger than my 56cm Trek Madone.

Whats your inside leg? I'm 5'9" and ride a 54cm Tarmac. I would have personally said 52cm. You really need to try it for size to be sure.

just over 5-10 and ride a 54 langster. but i'm typical mtb'er and probably want to be more upright than a proper roadie would be.

Inside leg is 32". Will try and size some up soon, but it is a second hand bike I am after and would feel a bit of an arse going to my LBS to try their bikes without any intention of buying one.

Just sold my Allez which was a 54. I'm 5' 8" with a 32" inside leg and it was a perfect fit for me.

So I'd say you'll definatley be fine, worst case a slightly shorter stem than the 110mm it comes with

Specialized sizing recommends;
52cm. 5' 3" - 5' 6"
54cm. 5' 6" - 5' 9"
Effective Top Tubes 537 and 548 respectively so you would probably be OK on either, although personally I would err on the smaller frame.
Only 11mm diff. in TT length so a 10mm shorter stem on the 54 will make them a similar size.

Ahh, good info Coleman. Cheers for that.

Looks like both sizes are viable then.

Have you seen this on the BR forum?

http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=12765292

CAAD 9's are supposedley decent frames, and specced with some Tiagra which is ok stuff. Might be worth a shot?

Did see it, but not much info. To be honest I think I am going to start cheap and if it is for me work my way up. Already made the first leap of splitting and selling the PA, just the frame to go.

Looking at this on ebay and this on Bikeradar at the mo.

I had a 54cm Allez Elite, I'm 5'6" with a 29" inside leg, it was too big for me.

You're a bit taller and leggier than me so it might be OK, however I'd be tempted to err on the smaller side if you're going 2nd hand. It's easier to move the saddle up/back and put on a longer stem if it's a bit small, if it's too big it'll always be uncomfortable.

Nice bike though.

Just had a look at the links you posted, both look in good nick and similar (same?) componentry so I'd say it'll come down to size.

Oh, and I'm sure you know already, but depending where you live and how much you ride you might want to consider a triple. <dons flameproof jacket>

That is probably a good thing. The 52 is 30 miles away and the 54 is in..dun dun duuuu! Hull. Which is about 2.5hrs drive.

I am in Cambridgeshire, so I assume I should be ok with a any option. Erm...I think?

Yeh, I got a cheapo first road bike (8 speed with thumb shifters!) but enjoyed it so bought a better one after 8 months.

however I'd be tempted to err on the smaller side if you're going 2nd hand.

I'd also do this since its the top tube length / reach thats the important bit, rather than leg length.

And a double or compact would be fine.

I am 5ft 6" and a 30" inside leg and I have a 52 Allez and it fits perfectly.

Now with this in mind I followed the Wiggle guide to determining your reach and it turns out I have a positive ape index, which suggests I should go for the larger of the 2 frames, in this case the 54.

Now I am even more confused.

Bum.

Managed to try out a 54cm Allez today, and to be honest I am still not sure. Standover etc was ok, as had an inch or so clearance. On the reach front, my arms were pretty straight when on the hoods. Felt a bit stretched out, but not sure whether this is because it is my first taste of the roadie way or because it is actually too big. The guy in the shop said I looked right on it and after briefly trying a 52cm Secteur he said the 54cm was the way to go.

...still not sure though. Especially as most people who have 54cm seemed to be 5'9"+.

On a sidenote, after looking at a nice shiny new bike I will probably go down that route as it defo seems worth having the LBS looking after you on the first road bike.

I'm about 5'9" and still find my 54cm Allez perhaps a little stretched out sometimes. However I think if I had anything smaller the seatpost would be out of the frame too much... With a shorter stem it might be ok, I just cba to start messing around with that!

I bought a 54cm Allez last october,I'm only 5'6 and I'm happy with it.I would have liked to try a 52cm but as it was the end of the year I could'nt get one.The only way you're going to be certain about the sizing is to demo the bikes.
I read somewhere that there are two styles of sizing,(sweeping generalisation alert)UK fashion is to get a smaller size & use a lot of seatpost,French go for a larger frame.
It's my 1st road bike and I want it for doing long days & sportives so I thought the larger size was more suitable for me,but whichever one you get I think you'll end up adjusting things to get it dialled in.

I'm 5' 10" and ride a 54cm when it comes to Spesh road bikes.

Personally speaking....I think it's better to be on a bike that's slightly too small then a bike that's slightly too big.

But, I'm an old git, what do I know? 😉

old allez and new allez are very different though. New allez geometry is the same as the Tarmac

The Allez I am looking at will be a 2009 I think. When did the new geometry come in?

...god this shouldn't be so difficult 😥

So does that mean the older ones will be more upright then?

Will have to have a look at the geometry on the Spesh website for the diff between years I guess.
