When I let all the air out of my Pikes they suck into their travel by about 100mm (140 travel)
This only seems to have started since I had the charge damper rebuild and a full service done.
I've serviced them myself before this and always refit the bottom bolts with the fork fully extended and never noticed this before.
I first spotted this after my forks started to feel very firm. I released the lower bolts, pulled the legs back to full travel then re-tightened the bolt and the forks stayed at 140mm travel.
My forks started to feel very harsh and firm again (about a month of riding later) and when I released all the air pressure tonight the fork once again sucked up into its travel by around 100mm.
Is this normal and I've just never noticed it before?
Any idea what to check or how to fix this?
The first time it happened I removed the airshaft and made sure the 'dimple' was free of grease.
I have a luffkappe fitted if that makes a difference.
Cheers
Try a zip tie down the side of each seal while at full extension.
tried a zip tie but it had no effect
Maybe the air transfer port is blocked then with an excess of pressure on the negative side.
When I had similar the lbs had scratched the airshaft 😕
Sounds like you have excessive pressure in the negative air chamber.
I would strip it and have a look, as above, might be damage.
I had similar, let the air out, take off top cap; foot on the wheel; pull really hard on the uppers (keeping the lowers on the attached to the wheel on the floor) - and basically wait for a sucking sound....
its quite likely the negative chamber - and this should hopefully pull through restore your travel.
Before this - I was only getting 130 of my 150 travel - now i have 150mm of glorious travel again 🙂
Easiest thing to do first is pump up to max pressure and then cycle the fork a few times making sure you pull them all the way back up. This should unblock the transfer port. Then do the zip tie when the forks are at full extension. If this doesn't work then you will need to start taking things apart as mentioned above.
