Common sense tells me this will be a thread full of sexual innuendos and I'm leaving myself wide open (etc etc) but I'm giving dry lube a proper go for the first time (fnarr).

Is it normal for my chain to look like someone has melted a candle along the entire length (oohh err) of it and for it to be tacky?

Cant help but feel it's going to collect more crap than the oil I usually use.

Or will I die?

Nah, it'll be a lot cleaner than the wet stuff. Finishline Dry goes on as you describe. You might have applied too much, though. Always wipe off any excess.

Personally, after putting some dry on last week, I am going back to wet, purely as I live in the UK, and the dry weather is purely to set us up for the wet 8)

What lube are you using? What did you use?Did you clean the chain thoroughly before the new stuff?

Whole drivetrain was properly cleaned, degreased and spit polished.

Using squirt. I probably am guilty of putting too much on.

I also know that it will rain tomorrow and it will be my fault. Was out last night and with all the dust on my chain it sounded and felt horrible.

Squirt is really good but it does need to be left to dry overnight.

Did your bottle have a blue or a white lid?

I've never got on with Squirt. I find that Pedros Ice Wax works well but this is a subject that will attract many opinions and recommendations.

It's a transparent bottle/blue lid.

I stuck in on the chain at dinnertime and it's still slightly tacky. After spinning the crank round a few times most of the excess has fallen off so it doesn't look too bad now.

I did try the finish line stuff last year but it felt/sounded like there was nothing on there.

I know it's a rare occasion but when things do dry out I can't stand the noise and feel that comes with an oiled chain.

Good, the blue lid is the real stuff.

Once it's dry, the excess will fall off. Does sound like you used a little bit too much though.

Thanks!

Will bear that in mind next time, what's the normal procedure? A drip on every link? I will be honest I just lagged it on before.

When the chain is clean and dry, I put one drip on each link, let it dry, then do a second.

After that, when it sounds dry, another drop on each link. Always let it dry overnight. Lube it after the last ride, not before the next.

I use Squirt in the summer, excellent if you can remember to apply it after a ride or plenty of hours before.

There was something recently about the American importer selling fake squirt. The real stuff has a blue lid, the fake stuff has a white lid.

I only really use dry lube on my road bike. Even if it hasn't rained for a week, I can still find plenty of puddles and mud on the local trails (and when was the last time it didn't rain for a week?).

I always put squirt on 30 seconds before I ride. For 5 years now. On all of my bikes. Super stuff and no ill effects. Looks like fresh jizz though

Could someone recommend a newbie like me a lube for dry and dusty conditions, with almost never any rain? The dust is of the fine red type and seems to cling to the drivetrain like a magnet. Something easily available.

It almost never rains and the dust is fine and red? You'll not be in the UK then so not sure what might be easily available to you.

I've been using a free sample of squirt recently and it seems very good.

Occamsrazor, I have a number of lubes to try. Send me a plane ticket to wherever you are and I'll personally apply each in turn for you to test over the course of a week.

🙂 No I'm in Kenya, but I will be buying online from the UK. Have just been reading good things about Squirt. Just looking for something that doesn't attract the dirt, is easy to clean, and doesn't require frequent cleaning (is that asking too much?) - am trying to avoid having to take the chain & cassette off for cleaning.
Edit: I should add that it does rain here, seasonally, but I can't be arsed going out to ride when it's wet. Fortunately I have that luxury...

Are people finding they need to re-apply Squirt before every ride? I tried it on my commuter (thinking it would cut down on the cleaning, etc) but the constant re-application actually made it more hassle!

Gone back to Epic Ride now which I use for everything/all conditions.

Squirt seems really situational, every so often I seem to find dirt that it's allergic to and it all goes horribly wrong. Good stuff though. Nothing like as good as the putoline melt-on wax but less faff too.

It is a fallacy that 'dry' lube is for dry weather, and 'wet' lube is for wet weather. The 'dry' and 'wet' refer to the nature of the lubricant, not the conditions it should be used in.

Dry lubes need applying more often (after most rides), whatever the weather.

Kenya

Squirt is from South Africa, so is probably well suited.

Finish Line Ceramic Wax. I warm it in my pocket for a bit then give it a really good shake, then apply it a drop per link, holding a rag underneath to catch the excess. I then run the chain through the rag's "wet spot" which simultaneously distributes the lube and removes any excess. It also helps to remove any grit build up.

Used dry lubes for many years now (inc wax based ones). Yesterday, I ordered some Morgan Blue Syn Race Oil to see if there is any difference in shifting performance/noise. I'm almost excited to find out the difference. How sad am I???

Bit off at a tangent, but I've always used finish line wet lube and never tried dry.

Being an oldie has me thinking that a chain should always have an oily film present for the lubrication to do its job.

Is squirt type stuff worth a go after all these years ?

Finish Line Ceramic Wax for me too, mainly because wet attracts the dust in our dry conditions. I so often forget to relube in advance though which effectively means I often ride without relubing.

Some suggest in these discussions that the lube is only needed within the chain itself, rather than to reduce external wear with the rest of the drivetrain. Sounds dubious to me, especially if you're coming from wet lubes, but I suppose no lube could possibly result in less wear than using a lube that attracts dirt. The general instruction to wipe excess lube away also seems to fit with this thinking.

Well had my first ride using the Morgan Blue Syn Race Oil on my chain today. Been using the dry lube for as long as I can remember. Anyway, I'm no expert but I will say that my drive-train has never been so quiet and smooth to shift gears. It is noticeably better than any dry lube I've ever used. The downside is that the chain and cassette have started to go black already. Now, there is nothing I love more on my bike than a gleaming chain and cassette. However, I may have to get over that and stick with the oil. I was impressed by the difference.
