My max HR has been set at 183 for a while (reading taken mid CX race, highest it's ever gone) from what I've read this will remain the same as fitness improves / drops

Tonight I'm climbing a good size hill (Meardy mountain from the Aberdare side) HRMs saying zone 4.9, with that reading I'd usually be pretty pasted and not able to sustain it for to long, but tonight I felt pretty good, not breathing to heavily, fairly comfortable for most of the climb - does this mean I'm getting a tiny bit fitter?

So many factors that affect HR and the Max can go up and down as well. Max HR during a CX race will be threshold mind, not absolute max.

Impossible to say without knowing more. If you had a power meter on the bike then it would be very easy to say.

Not well rested, cut the loop short in the end.....

Ah right, it has blipped higher at times but I'd ignored them as almost non-readings, yeah thinking about it the 183 is the top of a usual 178-183 figure at most cross races. Yeah a Power meter would be the answer, one day...
The Strava figures are pretty accurate right? ;o)

It's not complicated to work out your max. It's not easy either 😉

I find it hard to find a max sometimes, not something I do often because it hurts! Best done in a lab so you can keel over afterwards 🙂
