I updated the firmware on my Edge500 last week and as a result it set the GPS recording back to "smart" rather than every second.
First world problems defined, but my Strava account now has some very odd numbers from my last couple of training sessions.

The smart V every second is simply a user setting. Clearly smart is their default choice.
The firmware addressed a few bugs, added normalized power and left and right sided power readings, amongst other things.
