Had my first session at the Sir Chris Hoy velodrome tonight. Great facility and it was awesome to the power of rad.

Anyway will be looking to get a track bike soon so just a querry about sizing. My road bikes are 54cm but tonight i was put on a 56cm, even though i mentioned 54cm was my road size.

Is track sizing different? Is there an advantage going up a size? My 54cm road bikes (spesh tarmac and caad 9) fit very well - they are relatively racey in terms of geometry but comfortable too. I guess on a track bike most of the riding is in the drops rather than on the road where alot will be on the hoods.

I'll likely be buying online 2nd hand so wont get the chance to try it for size before purchase.

Same with road bikes, the sizing can vary a bit between brands.
Are they using the basic Dolan Pre Cursa bikes (it's what Manchester velodrome use)?

The geometry for those is here:

Compare that to your road bikes and see how you get on. It;s worth trying a couple of different sizes on the track sessions and seeing which feels best but bear in mind that the geometry of those hire bikes is aimed much more towards the "steady and stable" rather than "racy"

I was there for the first time too last night. It was excellent, got a real buzz from it. Looking at the banking thinking, there's no way I'm riding that to riding right round the top.

Re size, if you ride a 54, keep on a 54. I ride a 55 but would always err on the small side.

The blokes at the track are just guessing.

Yeah it was the Pre Cursa, was a nice stable ride (first track bike i've been on) which surprised me a bit, was expecting it to be more twitchy.

I rode those for quite a while before getting my own, they're pretty capable, I was doing SQT sessions on it but the 84" gear is a bit limiting sometimes.

This is a good website for track stuff:
http://www.velodromeshop.net/

and you'll probably find that Evans Cycles in Glasgow starts doing a lot more track specific kit as well now that the velodrome is open. Keep an eye on any message/For Sale boards there cos track bikes don't come up very often and when they do, the common sizes (54 and 56) sell very quickly.
