Out on my road bike this morning and had a guy hanging off my back wheel for a good 20km, then he just peeled off when I wasn't going the same route as him. Kind of weird he didn't even give me a cheery 'cheers pal' isn't it? Or is that just what folk do? Felt a bit odd, although I guess I could have turned round and said hello too...
I would not draft for that long without speaking even if it was just to breathlessly say all i could manage was to hug your wheel

Bit rude, I wouldn't do it, maybe for 1km but certainly not 20!

Height of rudeness IMO to draft someone without saying anything.
I've had various plums do this - even on my commute - some even stay there after my "vary speed for no reason at all" game. I guess I need to find a route with some proper potholes 😉

20 km and neither of you spoke? A bit odd but he / she should definitely have made an attempt to ride on the front. Most people with half a brain are only too appreciative of splitting the work with someone even if its only for a 5 km.

A flick of the elbow is normally understood to mean come through [and do a turn]. Sitting up and coasting also gives the same impression.
If you passed him then in all likely hood it was all he could do to hold your wheel. If he caught you then it is very strange. Normal civilised response would be to at least acknowledge you.
Guy did this to me once, dressed in full cervelo gear, all the way from helmet to socks, and then had a pop because he couldn't hold my wheel.

weirder was the bloke that came steaming past me and my gf, and then [i]while still in view[/i]: slowed up because he couldn't keep the pace up, I think my gf was more keen to repass him than I was, as she past him, he said something like "oh, thanks for showing me up"

Did you attempt to engage him on conversation at all or indicate it was his turn on the front? I bet there's a thread on roadietrackworld at the moment saying "well I caught up to this guy and sat on his wheel for a bit and the rude bastard never even turned to look at me or asked me to do a turn, is this normal?"

I know...I do recognise I was also being a bit rude. But in all honesty it's because the alpha male in me was riding too hard to turn foun and say anything...I like the tips of the elbow and sitting up thing though. Will try that next time. And might also chill out a bit!
