It's getting to the stage where I'd really like to mount my phone out front for long gravel days where I'm constantly referring to my route and also wanting to take pictures.

I've got a cheap Garmin mount I can try (a wee sticky 3M patch off eBay that would stick to an existing case) but I just don't feel confident that my phone won't bail on the first bumpy track!

Quadlock seem to have a good reputation and their 'universal' kit is at least much bigger, so I'd assume would have a better grip on phone.

Plus, just in general, having a smartphone sticking out in front seems a bit ponderous, are they better stem mounted?

I use a 76 designs stick on garmin mount with no problems in a year ish...

But i do loop the tether round the top tube just in case... and the garmin is probably lighter, and cheaper, and less likely to break anyway....

Hope that helps 😉

Had one for years, no problem.
I'd stick the mount thingy to a cheapo case for your 'phone though, then you don't have it stuck on there all the time, and you can just put the 'phone in the case when you want to attach it to the bike.

Haha, as I was typing post I was taking phone out of its case to check for a lanyard loop, no dice!

Phone doesn't owe me anything so at least if it did break it wouldn't be the end of the world other than massively inconvenient in the middle of nowhere!

Will try it on road bike first, even if it does look awful poking up above bars...

Great minds think alike, I've got a sacrificial old case ready and waiting

Just got one recently. Only used it on the road and it feels pretty secure (stem mount.)

I'm gonna try on the MTB tomorrow, see how it gets on! Pretty confident it will be fine.

Got a second case to stick the mount to as suggested.

Go Pro mounts use 3M glue patches. I must say I find it hard to fully trust them but I don't recall reading about any incidents where they've failed, even on curved surfaces like a helmet and /or in extreme heat/cold. The will come off if you mount to a surface that flexes (E.g. a snowboard), though.

On the flat back of a phone, I wouldn't worry at all about the glue but I don't know how secure the mounts are. Also I would worry about damaging the phone or looking like a dork with a phone on the bars.

Yeah... it won't be there day-to-day for road duties, but for big days out on the gravel bike (yeah, 'touring' by another name...) I think I can live with the dorkiness, my phone case is destroyed already from constantly taking it in and out to take photos and check navigation so needs must!

Will probably save 5 minutes in every 15 for stopping and messing around with phone as well.

I tried the stick on one on the road and it fell off when I hit a large bump. I glued the mount to a spare cover (Galaxy 5 with removable back cover) using structural metal glue from work. I've changed my phone to one that doesn't have removable cover so stopped using it. A solution is to find a hard plastic case you can glue/screw the mount to for peace of mind.
