I picked up a set of 2011 (or 2012) Mavic Crossmax ST wheels recently, used but seemingly in VGC. They seemed to perform perfectly well when I got them.
I noticed today that the rear cassette seems a bit laterally loose - only about 2mm of side-to-side movement. There also seemed to be a slight grinding noise. I took the freehub off and cleaned out some grit that got in there and re-assembled. The grinding seems to have gone, but the cassette still seems slightly loose. Any ideas?
While I'm here actually - are the spokes supposed to exhibit noticable movement when you pull them together with your fingers? Not sure if they need re-tensioned?
What freehub has it got, if it is the freehub body with the yellow/cream colour nylon bush then it's a 2010 wheel and these bushes can wear if crap gets in and in bad cases it can even wear the hub shell the bush spins on and that would give you the play you describe.
in this case only fix is a new freehub body.
the new 2012 wheel has an alloy freehub body with sealed cartridge bearings.
Thanks Baz. Just taken it to bits and it does have a nylon bushing. How archaic!
Just done some googling and seems there's someone going by the name of The Hub Doctore in the US who sells retro-fittable bearings to replace the bushing. Will maybe give it a shot.
I think someone in the classifieds was selling a set that had that upgrade
Not Realy archaic just simple and perfectly reliable if the mavic service shedual is kept to, strip down wipe out reoil twice a year, i've just sold a pair of ten year old crossmax disc's with the nylon bush and running as good as new.
Hi Kevin, I bought my Crossmax ST's second hand 6 yrs ago and they are still running brilliantly. As above, Hub Doctor service kit inc the oversize nylon jobbie, very easy service, no special tools, vids on FaceTube. Great wheels.... Light and strong rims.
