Mine can't be used, when the pads are close to the rim I can't squeeze them together enough to release the straddle wire.
Anything I can put in line, or is there a trick I'm missing?

try an adjustable canti hanger, like this one that allows you to shorten the outer sufficiently to unclip the straddle wire nipple from the frogleg?

Don't set your pads so close to the rim.

😀

In all seriousness, that's one of the advantages of Frogglegs. You can set them up with pads further away from the rim for more mud clearance.
