As per title I'm thinking of fitting a steerer extender like the below to a steel cross fork:

To do so I'll need to tap the star nut out through the bottom of the fork - will this cause any damage?

steerer's often get narrower towards the bottom so don't assume it'll go all the way through.

easiest is to get a large drill bit and drill the middle out of the sfn that's in there and then use a junior hacksaw type blade to cut up the rest if needed.

Just tap it down out of the way. you won't need to push it all the way through.

Tapping the star nut down the steerer is fine. I'd be more concerned about using the extender though. Whether the steerer can cope with the shearing forces the extender will place on it or not. Older threaded forks would be fine, but threadless steerers, I think, are thinner.

Hmm. Thanks, some food for thought there.

Maybe I should just sort out my back 🙂

I've used steerer extenders without issue on a couple of commuters. I just purchased another about 5min ago for a cheapy college build I'll be commuting on.
Certainly wouldn't want to use one off road over anything technical, but never had one slip or move.
Also - they weigh a lot.

Slightly OT .... I spoke to BBB about those extenders ^^^^

They categorically said not to use them off road.

Enough to make me rethink my options!
