[Closed] Q about Changing to 10 speed transmission as my chainset has given up the ghost

Hi
Ive managed to keep my old 9 speed transmission going but it looks like its about time to replace it after nearly 6 years of use .My front mech broke the other day, my shifters even after servicing are playing up and my derailleur is bending (probably as s result of being bent back into shape on a few to many rides !) .
Its currently a mixture of mostly 9 XT speed and having a look for buying transmission replacement Im after an XT one since it worked in the past and im looking for durability over weight (I tour on this bike as well).
Would it be false economy to go the 9 speed again ?(Im concerned I will buy a 9 speed replacement and find a year later Im going to have to upgrade anyway when I need new parts, if they stop selling it)

Or is it worth going the 10 speed route. Ive never ridden the 10 speed stuff so dont really know how well it works and how durable it is. Im quite happy to go 10 speed (although there are some deals on 9 speed stuff)as it seems a good time to change everything in one go as Im starting to get more and more mechanicals whilst riding (I can def feel the shifting being sluggish) .

Any advice gratefully received

Cracking deal on full slx drivetrain here:-

I think they also do an XT one for a little more. Dunno if the above is your thing, but it's an option.

9spd will be around for a few more years yet. But looking 4 or so years you will probably find that the only cassettes available will be Deore level rather than XT. Rings, Chains, won't be an issue as they are widely available from someone, if not an OE make, a front mech is a front mech. The only debating point is the rear mech. This will follow a similar route to the cassette, but depends on how readily you bend them as too whether it will ever matter.

so if i am running 9spd rear mech, front mech and 9spd shifters, all i would need to change is cassette, rear mech and rear shifter to go 10spd, do i take it 9spd 3 ring chainset will work fine?!

You will need a 10 speed specific MTB rear mech, as shimano changed the pull ratio (diferent from sram 10 speed and shimano's own 10 speed road stuff) from 2:1 to 1.8:1

Just to ask one of the questions above again. Does anyone know if you can get away with running a 9 speed xt chainset and front mech with a 10 speed rear mech/cassette/chain/shifter?

Thanks,

Mark
