Heading down to the pyrenees in September for 10 days. Aiming for the bagneres de bigorre area for access to the tourmalet and peyresoude. Any recommendations for campsites? Ideally within walking distance of some bars and restaurants. Not fussed about having swimming pools or anything like that. A basic site would be fine. Cheers.
If you go to bagneres du Luchon then the arome vanilla campsite is nice. Basic but decent facilities on site. Two fields, one with fixed plots surrounded by hedges, one open field with big trees for shade which always seems to be empty. Luchon town is a short walk away with good bars and restaurants and of course the massive bubble lift with great riding under it. Some good walking too.
Stayed at Aerotel in Luz Saint Saveur twice in recent years - great campsite, lovely town and Holy Ground, being at the very foot of the Tourmalet (and also Luz Ardiden, where Armstrong was brought down by a spectator) Loads more to do in that area esp Gavarnie way, hiking up to the Spanish border, Col du Tentes is another great climb in that national park area.
It's a fairly well-appointed site, though - not basic, popular with families but chilled [ie not banging kid's disco or big water park]. Can't recall it being that expensive but would obv be more than something basic.
Would have gone there again this year but the ferry to Santander is a bit pricey and time consuming - nice way to travel though. Decided to drive to the Alps for something different.
There’s a fab little campsite in a town called ‘loudenvielle’ which is about 20mins from Luchon ski area. It’s got a little lake, pump track, and lovely local shop. It’s very quiet, being a family type place. If that’s what you’re looking for.
