Mrs_h has started to hint that she likes the idea of an e-bike, which I have to agree would make a lot of sense apart from the cost of said machine versus the amount in reality she would ride it.

Any e-bike close to the price range we’d spend would be a world away from the machine she has today (a really decent full suspension cast off special)

So to avoid new bikes, are there any viable retrofit options worthy of consideration that doesn’t get us close to new bike territory?  I’d describe her as an enthusiastic occasional cyclist - not harcore by any means but more than the odd towpath.

IMO the best of the conversion kits are the tongsheng mid mount kit.  thread on it here

Another tongsheng fan here, on a hardtail that's become more of a utility bike.

I have a tong sheng and a LaPierre Overvolt . The ready made bike is streets ahead of the conversion.

I'm sure it is, but it's also £2k+.
Don't get me wrong if I was ever to buy a ready made ebike it'd probably be something like that, but for ~£600 you can convert an existing bike and still get the benefits which is what the OP is after.
