I made the decision today to keep the best bike (steel ATB/tourer) for 2-3 season use only, and forcing the 10yr old (alu) MTB into multipurpose winter hacking with two sets of tyres (offroad and hybrid) and some guards.
So just washed the steel bike down and want to get it back like nearly new(it's not far off). Came to do the tyres and realised that other than soap and water I've never really properly cleaned tyres. A quick look on Youtube sidewall-cleaning tips pulls up North American products like 'Son of a Gun' or '409'. eh?
Any tips? Don't really want to go splashing out on autopart trye products, just want to get them back to blackish, and hopefully not crack while in warm storage?
Also, frame saver? Worth it? Or just whip out the BB and blast a ton of GT85 in there?
Son of a Gun
Has to be a great product.
Lovely, lovely name.

Great for keeping tyres black n' clean
I store all my tyres in the garden shed all year round and so far have never seen any perish and the oldest is about 7years old. I have never cleaned a tyre with more than a hose either.
Thnks folks, useful stuff. Linseed oil eh? At least it's cheap, but yr room will smell like a putty-podgers palace 🙂
I use muc-off/rhino-goo/proper-cleaner and a jet wash and that gets my tyres like or better than new.
Then a dusting of Muc-off Bike spray and wipe it down.

If they’re folding, get the worst off then sling ‘em in the washing machine. Same setting as you might wash trainers, tyres come out like new.

I'm pretty particular about keeping things clean but seriously, you put your tyres in the washing machine?
I just give them a hose down, gets the worst off, it's a tyre, doesn't need to be spotlessly clean.
Not as a rule but I have done when flying, it’s easy and as a bonus the grip improves. If I were storing a bike inside for the winter I probably would and also probably remove the chain to prevent accidental oiling of stuff in the house.
In the shed I’d just do a normal clean and lube.
I’m not big on cleaning bikes but I would use the washing machine before buying special tyre cleaner.
silicone spray is pretty effective. Not necessary but it looks good.
Silicone spray the whole bike apart from the chain which I would spray with WD40.
But TBH, tyres are not going to die over winter. I've got tyres that are several years old and they are fine.

People actually clean their tyres? Blast of water and done. I’ve genuinely never considered giving them a proper clean. Might give it a go now though.
