I've got a tin in an Argos fryer than I'm not using. Don't really get on with removing chain etc.

Flick me a message if interested.

...but I noticed the chain was really noisy. A metallic clacking noise like some turn of the century loom.

There is an audible difference IME when the putoline has expired and the chain becomes more "rattley" leave it long enough and it gets squeaky.

When freshly applied and external putoline has been wiped away there is a sort of muted sound to the chain as you pedal, mostly I assume becaue you have the links packed with a viscous waxy material that makes it oddly quiet when your used to a wet lubed chain , what you do end up noticing is any sounds from other parts of the drivetrain like knackered jockey wheels or (if running 1x) the sound chain engagement with N/W teeth can make at extreme angles.
It might not be the chain being noisy so much as sounds from other things it's interacting with that are now more noticable...

Been meaning to ask this for a week or so - anyone ever had any issues with Putoline on fancy SRAM XX1 chain?

Thought I'd give SRAM a go as all things point to it lasting f'ing ages. Other wise been running putoline for about 4yrs now across all bikes, on XT or Deore chains.

My experience of it after 4-500kms (2x putoline treatments in that time, some seriously wet and muddy adventures):

Pros: It's nice that the fancy chain coating doesn't show any signs of surface rust after being put away wet. That's the only thing that disturbs me on normal chains.

Cons: Stiff links! Like, welded together stiff links.

First one happened about 250kms in, was a disturbing experience as I have never had one before - thought indexing had gone to hell, awful to get the BANG! on rides under power, eventually found it, cured it, have since re-putolined as well. Last week BANG CRUNCH BANG! same again, but this time there were 6 almost rigidly stiff links. Have now taken chain off and replaced with new Deore, all is well with the world again.

WTF?

Complete user error on my part. Upon closer inspection at lunchtime I had indeed threaded the chain incorrectly around the derailleur 😩

Thanks molegrips.

Stiff links! Like, welded together stiff links.

One of the theories doing the rounds is that you need space in the chain for the putoline to go somewhere, so it may be better to get a chain that's made to 'looser' tolerances  XX1 chains don't have much room in the rollers and spaces between the links so the putoline may just sit on the outside of the chain.

Watching with intrest as I have an X01 chain that is currently just waxed using Molten Speed Wax. I had thought that I would Putoline it for the winter but perhaps I won't now...

Apologies, didn't fancy trawling through 19 pages... (I'm lazy I know 😁). Brand new chain and cassette on spare wheels for my Diverge specifically for road use, do I fry the new chain straight from the packaging? Or, as its for road only, is it worth using standard lube on this one til it runs out, then putolining it? (MTBs and chain for gravel stuff already putolined.)

You need to clean it now before waxing it or the wax won't stick properly.  Once you've oiled it it will get even more difficult to clean properly.  That's how I understand it.  More info on zerofrictioncycling of course

Has anyone had any issues with KMC 11 speed chains and waxing? I’m sure I read somewhere that KMC has some kind of coating that the wax cannot adhere too but now I can’t find it.

Have 2x KMC chains for the gravel bikes and unsure whether to try it or not.

It's been fine on my KMC 10 speed chain that came on the gravel bike originally. Having said that, because I'd (foolishly) used Muc-Off wet lube for a good while, the chain was degreased with non nonsense degreaser a couple of times before I tried it the first time. Also, same prep, but fine on the KMC 11 speed on my Bizango. More professional putoliners will be along soon to provide better guidance. I'm genuinely still a novice.

Putoline probably OK on a KMC but Zero Friction say waxes like MSW and Silca don’t adhere properly..

Have had no issues with KMC chains, just throw them in the pot with no cleaning - even from new.

KMC fine for me too with putoline, though I am an an obsessive paraffin cleaner (and I hate KMC's sticky factory lube) so I've always cleaned them first, maybe that makes a difference?

Has anyone had any issues with KMC 11 speed chains and waxing?

Been running two KMC X11s alternately on my road/gravel bike for a while now. I just took one off for rewaxing as it was starting to grumble towards then end of a damp 200km audax at the weekend. I can't remember when I put it on, but I know it had done at least 250 miles before that, probably more, including 100 in almost constant rain.

So no, basically 😀

@fqzzini as a recent convert I ran my chain on factory lube (SRAM) until it started making noises. Then just dunked it straight in the Putoline fryer.

Gave it the first rewax over the weekend, as it had started to squeak. Not surprising when local riding ends up looking like this:

Here's another related one, how do we reckon putoline would behave in bearings?

I had to pop the shield and apply some oil/grease to loosen some hub bearings the other day and it occured to me could try popping both shields and dunking bearings in putoline?

Maybe not hub bearings, possibly pivot bearings?

It sort of makes sense to me a Graphite loaded wax in a bearing that doesn't spin fast but is subject to high loads and moves through a limited angle, a bit like a chain bushing perhaps...

Thoughts? Viable? Terrible idea?

It might be like those solid bearings that were talked about a while back.  Try it.
