You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Just a quick one; are you meant to leave the heat on or off when the chain is sat in the oil/wax?
Cheers.
I leave the heat on. Let the wax penetrate into the links and air bubbles will rise and swap with the wax. Then pull chain out and allow to drip back into the tin and wipe off external excess.
spend another tenner on a small deep-fat fryer - WELL worth it IMO
With my homebrew wax with molybdenum disulfide I also leave it hot and drip off the excess. I don't bother to wipe the outside but then I am running singlespeed so it doesn't flake off.
I use a little slow cooker and would probably get a mini deep fat fryer if buying another.
Cheers. Wasn't sure if there was benefit in the wax cooling amd getting slightly thicker.
I think capillary action retains sufficient wax inside the chain.
Leave it hot, I find it seems to work best when left for a good 10minutes or more in the fryer whilst I'm faffing elsewhere.
And the runnier the better, I melt it at 100c in the fryer the set it to 220c to wash out any crud from between the links and make sure it gets everywhere. If not then the vacuum as it cools would suck it in anyway.
I usually do all my bikes at once so 4 or 5 chains go in and say there till I've finished whatever other job I'm doing. Just make sure you know which chain is which when they come out (paperclips are good if you have several identical chains).
I wipe the excess off, but it makes no difference really as long as it's hot it runs off pretty quickly and any excess would quickly be worn off on the bike it might just make shifting a bit clunky.
Marvelous. Thanks.
