Putoline chain wax as frame saver?

Just resprayed a steel frame to build a new commuter. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to stick some frame saver type product in there now to stop it rusting from the inside, so reading up a bit about different options.

I'd favour a thicker product that would give a nice thick coat, rather than a spray which is easy to apply, but probably would need redoing every few years, which realistically I probably won't do.

Some people use thinned Waxoyl, apparently (annoyingly I used the last of a tin of Waxoyl to treat some fence posts just to get rid of it). Wondered whether Putoline thinned a bit with white spirit (or even just heated) would work.

Any thoughts?

Well, if its as shit at stopping your frame rusting as it is stopping your chain rusting after a muddy ride, I wouldn't bother.

There are things designed for it.

It's brilliant at being a lube, but in my experience it's useless at preventing rust.

I don't think this applies. Chains get rubbed and abraded a lot, frame insides don't.

You could use Putoline to protect your frame but it strikes me that it would be rather difficult as you'd have to heat it quite a lot and wave it around so that could be hard to actually do. I used Waxoyl, which melts at a much lower temperature.  This is however both good and bad - it's really easy to melt and wash around inside your frame as it goes very liquid under just mild heat, but the downside is that you end up running the risk of it melting out inside a hot car and dripping on your brakes.  I spent ages making sure ALL the excess had run out when I did mine.  But it is quite nice to handle and smells like dubbin wax that you put on boots.

I wouldn't thin the Waxoyl it's very runny with just a touch of heat.  Thinned Putoline?  Hmm, if you could get something that would evaporate, maybe.  But really, it's lube, not waterproofing grease.

Ha, that had crossed my mind kayak 😄

But it's only rubbish at stopping chains from rusting on the bits where you wipe it off.

Good point about low temp melting molgrips. This is unlikely to see the inside of a car, but could end up being locked up in the sun. Will try not to leave excess inside.

Distributing it inside the frame shouldn't be too difficult if thinned/heated to the right consistency while it's just a frame and fork.

Yes it was very easy when I did it. Spray loads in one hole, warm up the tube and it runs around all over the place and out of the other hole
