I've recently built up a 29er and seem to be having a run of bad luck with punctures.
The latest being while the bike was stationary in a car park!
I'm using some Giant 29er wheels with a continental and specialized tyres and Schwalbe inner tubes.
The puncture while stationary is a tear/flap in the tube about the size and shape of half a 1p piece.
I've felt round the tire and the rim but can't feel any sharp objects.
Any ideas what is causing this?
Tyre not seated properly.
Are you stabbing the tubes with metal tyre levers?
Tube pinched by bead?
Weak tube over inflated? I've had that happen before - tyres with higher pressure for some road miles suddenly gone pop. It's happened at under the recommended maximum pressure.
Thanks for quick responses, the wheel that had the stationary puncture is one that I do seem to have a problem getting the tire to seat correctly, takes some pulling and pushing to seat the bead so I think you are onto something.
I had this for a while when I first got back into cycling. Thought I was going mad, I'd lock the bike away in the shed and by morning they'd be flat. I still check my tyres by habit before I get the bike out 🙂
Turned out to be microscopic shards of glass still stuck in the tyre. I guess after I'd fixed the puncture and got the main culprit out, there was still all these other tiny bits I'd missed. Pumped up to 95PSI I guess it only takes a small bump to get another puncture. Had to get them all out with a pin, tweezers, and a big magnifying glass/lamp thing. And then superglue the little holes.
Rim tape in good nick?
I hadn't had a puncture for about 2 years until last week's ride when I had three. It must just be bad karma or something!
Would not go with Panaracer flataway as they harden over time and cut into your tube or simply don't do good enough job stopping objects from getting through also cannot transfer to new tyres. Early days yet,(3 months winter training on road bike and London commute) but new improved Mr Tuffy tape light is a good option and I fold the overlapping end to create a smoother edge but this could be unnecessary.
Innertubes? Seriously?
Stan's tubeless FTW!
I've been plauged by the puncture fairy a lot too recently. The ones that I get are the ones that don't reveal themselves until you've spent all day at work looking forward to a night ride, get home, storytime & child into bed, get changed, faff with helmet lights, mate turns up, go to get bike Aghhhhh, basted.
I have had a bad run recently too, it seems to go in phases depending on hedges being cut, heavy rain exposing sharp pieces of flint of crap being washed onto the roads.
