After a 'pmoment' out the other night where my Crank Bros pump seemed to not work after a year of inactivity in a camelback, and it appears I had forgotten to pack any Co2 cartidges, I've decided a new, reliable pump is required.
I've great success road pump wise with a Specialized Air Tool, any experiences of the MTB version or recommendations?
Topeak Mountain Morph seem to be popular, though I'm not sure i could be bothered using the track pump style foot, and I'd probably get the mini one. Any thoughts on them and can you just hold it and pump away with abandon like a normal pump?
I've the Mountain Morph that stays with the fat bike and the Mini-Morph that stays with the hard tail. Both can be used either "track-style" or "in the hand".
I’d second the Mountain Morph. When my old Spesh Airtool started struggling I got one, and it’s never disappointed me yet. I’ve used it flipped out as a mini trackpump and in the hand, and it works just as well both ways. It’s no substitute for a proper trackpump, but I could see the ‘track’ mode being really useful for some, possibly smaller, riders.
There’s a Lezyne that keeps getting big love in Fat circles too but I can’t remember what it is. As tyre volumes have increased, the potential for overlap between road and mountain bike pumps is diminishing I think. It’s becoming more important for a mountain bike pump to shift a lot of air fast rather than be capable of holding pressures over 60psi.
Definitely get one with a hose though. The super compact chuck-on-pump ones are lovely and compact but you’re only ever one mistake away from a damaged valve which is a much bigger problem if tubeless than if tubed.

I use a Micro Floor Drive HV guiding and many people have bought them after seeing it in action!
Mountain Morph. Usually mounted to the CX / commuter bike, taken off and in the backpack for the MTB. Bulky, but definitely worth it if you need it. I even used (took) it for the 3 Peaks CX earlier this year, figured the weight and bulk were worth the trade off if I got a pinch flat (I didn't!). Having used a mini Lezyne for years (and having it unscrew the valve core several times just when you've pumped things up again!), I just want a reliable pump that gets a decent amount of air in with minimal fuss ... Mountain Morph does exactly that!
