Just about to change some brakes over on a new frame, which (unfortunately) has internal routing through the frame. It's a specialized carbon stumpy.
Never had a frame with internal routing before, so was unsure as to the in-and-outs. Do I have to completely bleed the brake first so I don't get any hydro fluids inside the frame holes?
How hard is it to guide the new hoses through? Maybe I'm expecting a terrible task when it'll be easy!
If you have a reverb stealth and have the little red barbed thing it’s fairly easy.
Start with a cotton thread and a vacuum, suck the thread through, then drag a gear cable back through. Then slide a gear cable over that. That’ll be all you need for gear side of things, for hydraulic lines use the red thing screwed into the gear cable and reverse threaded into the hydraulic line. Done up tight you won’t lose any fluid ( probably). You can now drag the hydraulic line through.
Hope that makes sense, it’s all do able with a calm problem solving head.
Ok- great tips. That's just what I was looking for. I'm pretty good with the spannering, so that sounds very achievable (from where I'm sitting, with a massive cheese board and fine Chateauneuf)
Let's see if in practice it's that straightforward.
If you are buying new cables/hoses, coloured ones are easier to see inside a frame.
Was hoping to remove the SRAM guides and install shimano brakes, without having to fully bleed either of them. Although having to take them apart will force me to cut them to the right length- usually I'm lazy and have lots of flapping around cable.
Am I right in assuming that the SRAM brakes have mineral oil in them, not DOT fluid?
SRAM have DOT, Shimano mineral.
Ok. Great info. Ta.
Should I be concerned about carbon frame and DOT fluid? I'm obviously gonna try to to get it everywhere, but would it be a disaster?
I chop off the olive/barb and pop a small self Tapper in the hose end. Keeps the fluid in and pulling cables on my frames is easy without chase cables.
I couldn’t remove old brakes (or install new ones) without cutting the olive off the end of the hose as it wouldn’t fit through the frame otherwise
