@jamezee, do you know if SRAM powerlocks are compatible with Shimano and KMC chains?

Blimey, the first of the running jackets has arrived, the one that was £100. It’s my first ever running specific jacket, but v surprised how flimsy is. I think I’d have been sending it back had it been £25, unless it is some super duper technical fabric.

I’ve also just had my running  jacket turn up.
mine was the one that was meant to be £150. It’s a nice jacket and medium fits nicely. It’s is thin but guess that’s what you need for running. If it is even fairly water proof then it’s a steal at £10 but no way on earth I’d have paid anywhere near £150.
thanks to @baddddad for  posting though…an actual Black Friday decent deal!

Isn’t that the point though? Re the running jackets.

Spend more for a lighter weight thinner garment?

Anyway, haven’t tried one myself, but enjoying my Endura Windproof MTB jacket which is wafer thin but keeps the wind out and therefore me warm.

Works components up to 30% off. Don’t often do sales either.

Had a few chainrings which have always been decent and seem like the go to for angle sets.

Shimano BH90 olives. £0.30 each. (Barbs can be reused if cut out carefully)

https://www.wiggle.com/p/shimano-bh90-olive-insert

Mine turned up today, barbs/inserts included. I'd have bought a few more if I'd known! The sram 12 speed chain connecter dooberries are the real deal too, in proper aftermarket packaging.

Gutted I missed the X01 chains for 36 sterlings, they'd sold out by the time I went back to order them.

I got the same one in medium, I found the fit good, the sleeves are a good length and not too flappy and the packed size is nice and dinky which was what I primarily wanted.
But yeah if I'd paid £20 let alone the supposed £100 list price I'd have been returning it. Interestingly it seems like it lacks features features that many runners would typically look for like hem grippers and draw strings, thumb loops, etc...

I've Not tried it in anger yet, I'll be interested to see just how effective the DWR coating actually is in a damp day...

I've just received one of the £150>£10 waterproof jackets, thanks for the PSA. Looks pretty good, I'm yet to test its water resistance. Wasn't sure if "medium" in runner terms would be too small for regular folk but the fit is rather good. It packs down really well, a very good just-in-case jacket.

+1

Looks like it might be too big, but fits really well.

Yes it's very flimsy, but that might be good for running. Will test in the next couple of days.

Also got one of the £5 LS running tops, nice mango colour. That's thin too, but fits great.

The DHB jacket is pretty decent hot running bring lightweight, vents under arms, so far waterproof. Don't know how good long term, but as a lightweight waterproof it's decent.  Don't want a heavy jacket at all whilst running.

Yeah I went for a late drizzley stroll in it yesterday.
For a tenner it's a good purchase, the perforated pits are a simple solution.

If I could have pretty much the same thing, but with a slightly longer back and a zipped rear pocket, delete the hood but keep a high-ish collar with the same drawstrings to seal up the neck a bit that would be good. I found the hood actually works OK, and can sort of act like a snood/buff would when zipped up to my chin, the hood bunches at the back to provide some neck coverage which could work well on the bike.
I'd maybe pay ~£25 for a sort of 'Wishlist' ultralight cycling Pack-a-mac like that perhaps. But anyone who dropped £100+ on a DHB running jacket must be insane.

I got one of these jackets a couple of weeks back. https://amzn.to/41praq8 First use over the weekend and again this morning and it already seems like it is an excellent purchase for £50 (down from £135.)

Just above freezing temperatures in the sun on the moors 3 hr MTB ride on Saturday. Just a base layer under it and it was a little too warm at points, if anything. Otherwise just very comfortable. Pissing it down with rain this morning on the commute into work. Only 15 minutes ride, but DWR coped excellently. Totally dry underneath and warm when I arrived at work. Again just a base layer under.

Size up. I am usually an L (sometimes even an M depending on pie consumption/cut) but definitely an XL in this

Well I was gonna get the Prime Orro 700c alloy gravel wheels off CRC today, but they've whacked the price up £100 now.

But I see the 650b version is £130, which might suit some of you...

Think you can use EXTRA10 as well.

Thanks @charlie.farley was quite gutted I missed that first time around. Several ordered for Xmas presents. Both my lads need new waterproofs...I always end up having to carry them on walks (even though they are late teens and really should carry their stuff themselves!) so those lightweight ones are spot on.

Also have the windproofs for same price https://www.wiggle.com/p/dhb-aeron-flt-windproof-jacket

Note that's the men's link. Women's also available for wind and waterproof for same price by the look of it.

Is it possible to not use the single 2.5mm BB spacer to compensate? (probably not)

You'd have to use it, but no reason it can't go on the non drive side, if 52.5 works and everything clears OK

Haha, I've been subtly enquiring whether my GF needs any fitness clobber but it seems not 🙁

Just did debut run in the windproof jacket. Pretty good, even though I was wearing my thinnest baselayer and it was freezing out.

Makes a good combo with the £10 running trews.

Thx. Sounds like a plan. 0.5mm off I can live with. In fact I read somewhere it was actually a better chainline than 52 for Boost.

It will depend. I tried 55 chainline on one of my boost bikes but it was obviously not the ideal for that bike. Hopefully you can make them work ok for your setup.

I bought the full suite of 3 of those tops (the windproof, the waterproof and the thermal). I was mathematically on the edge of L and XL. As they looked snug on the models, I went XL and regret it. They'll be ok, but they are baggier than I choose.

Yes sure it's not optimal however did you put the 2.5mm spacer on the non drive side to give you a quasi 52mm boost chainline.

While this still sounds too good to be true, I am perhaps just lucky that I currently have 10mm chainring clearance to the stay on a 30t with a Boost 52mm chainset. But I can see that perhaps a 34t wouldn't work indeed.

Chainreaction/Wiggle fire sale of 2023 - coming to an Ebay near you soon. It seems £40 is the going mark up for the running jackets.

I don't get the "not worth £150" comments. As somebody who overheats riding hard in a regular waterproof this may be be the best tenner I've ever parted with. Not sure I'll trust it with a backpack however.

I brought the waterproof and windproof not realising they were running jackets. Ordered in XL so expecting/hoping they'll be on the looser side (6'2, 14 and a bit stone). I'll find out in a couple of days when they turn up. Either way, a bargain for £25 for both.

Got some five tens from Evans and some trousers from decathlon (not discounted). I've spent more on cycle clothing in the last few days than I've spent on cycle clothing in the last 6-7 years.

I have a 52mm chainline on a 135mm frame (Deore 12 speed), equivalent to 55mm chainline on a boost frame, backpedalling in the 51t sprocket the chain never falls off. I'd say if you don't use the lower gears too much 55mm is fine. For Shimano 55mm chainline there are 2x 3mm spacers (one each side to achieve the 55mm chainline, so Q-Factor is 178mm compared to 172mm) in addition to the 2.5mm DS spacer. So you could move either the 3mm or 2.5mm spacer to the NDS if your cranks clear the chainstay.  The 3mm spacer goes on the outside of the BB so you wouldn't have to remove the BB if wanted to move that. SRAM 55mm chainline are achieved by offsettting the chainring and there are no additional 3mm spacers.

The trick with chainline imo on 1x is to see if it physically fits, and then forget about it. Nobody can even agree what the best chainline really is- it's logical for it to be the middle but you spend more time in the lower gears, but then the different sizes also wear differently and have slightly different chain angle considerations anyway because of tooth shaping... If it works it works, none of my 3 bikes have the same chainline. We're a long way from worrying about crossover gears.

Yep Shimano switched boost from 52 to 55mm quietly in 2021, with no real explanation. My take is if you spend most of your time doing uplifts and so in the smaller cogs go 55mm. If you spend most of your time like me wheezing away in the big cogs then 52 is better. I doubt 3mm or 1 cog makes much difference though.

For Shimano 55mm chainline there are 2x 3mm spacers (one each side to achieve the 55mm chainline, so Q-Factor is 178mm compared to 172mm) in addition to the 2.5mm DS spacer.

Silly question but do those 3mm spacers come with the cranks or a BB?

Currently I have a SLX 12 speed chainset that gives me a 52mm chainline and the shifting is perfect.

I am expecting a M8120 XT chainset so I was planning to swap the 2.5mm to the non drive side to retain 52.5mm. But now I am a bit confused about the 3mm spacers that you mention. Do I need to fit them at all ? (if they come with the chainset).

Or is there a Super Boost 55mm BB ?

The 3mm spacers come with the cranks and yes you need them both otherwise the axle will be too long to achieve preload.

They are actually 2.5mm spacers Nick and come with the BB. If your frame BB shell is 73mm then you fit just one on the drive side. If its 68mm then 1 NDS and 2 DS. Shimano mtb cranks need a BB spaced at 95.5mm to the outside of the BB.

Shimano MTB threaded cups are 10mm so on your 73mm frame BB shell from left to right (NDS to DS) 10+73+2.5+10=95.5mm

I would just fit the M8120 as specified with one spacer on the drive side and see how you get on

Yes, you need the 2x 3mm spacers ( they should come with the crankset) as M8120 axle is 6mm longer than the SLX M7100 axle. You might be OK with a 55mm chainline - one 3mm spacer each side or just move the 3mm DS spacer to NDS to keep your 52mm chainline but your Crankset centre will off compared to the centre of the BB.

You cannot fit the M8120 crankset without the 2x 3mm spacers as stated above.

Cheers Andy. I am aware of the 2.5mm spacer which I currently use on the DS with my 73mmm shell but others are saying that the 3mm spacers comes in addition, one on each side, to yield a 55mm CL. I was considering putting the 2.5mm spacer on the NDS for a 52.5 CL.

Either way thanks to the 3 of you and I should probably stop the digression.

Yes sorry Nick just checked the M8120 chainset that came from CRC today. It has an axle length of 121mm as opposed to 115 for SLXm7100 and comes with 2 x 3mm spacers.
So yes, correct, you need; BB Installed with one 2.5mm BB spacer on Ds. Chainset installed with 1 x 3mm on DS and 1 x 3mm non Ds

Yes Andy except I'll try and test the 2.5mm BB spacer on the NDS on purpose as my chainring as loads of clearance. I do use the 2 biggest cogs quite a lot on the South Downs.

I can't remember if there is any leeway to adjust my cleats to offset for the imbalance created.

Just bought their Down jacket which was £100(originally £250) so a fair saving and im in need of one anyway as my alpkit is rather tatty, with poorly stitched up rips.

So apparently theres an extra10' which is either 10% off or a tenner off the price and which I applied at checkout, and was accepted, but the price has remained at £100, not £90 that you'd expect.

Receipt to paypal is also £100. So anyone know what the score is here 😕
