Currently run a 34t Narrow Wide - worth a try on a 32t to see what they are like at that price

Just ordered a 32T Oval to give it a go. For £15, why not! 🙂

How did it go with the Superstar 32T Oval? Have you tried it yet?

I got mine and fitted it along with all brand new KMC X10-73 chain, M771 XT cassette, and M640 Zee derailleur, on my 456. It all worked perfect while it was clean, but as soon as it saw any mud it kept dropping the chain and it was unusable.

As long as I kept the power on, and the chain was in tension, it worked ok. However, every time I moved the pedals without tension on the chain, the chain would ride up onto the top of the teeth, instead of between them, and then fall off. Imagine how often you reposition your pedals slightly on a descent, or just pedal slowly forward or back while freewheeling etc. Every time the chain would fall off.

On closer inspection, I could see that the chain riding up onto the top of the teeth was happening on exactly the same teeth every time. It happens twice per revolution, when either of the pedals was at the 1 or 2 o'clock position. It's almost as if one or two teeth, at that spot on each side of the oval, are slightly too far apart.

I'm assuming that it might bed in and the offending teeth might wear down quickly such that the chain fits better. I have ordered a plain old fashioned round chainring while the offer was still on just in case.

Before anyone asks, yes my chainline os ok, yes I've got the narrow/wide teeth lined up with the inner/outer plates on the chain, yes I've got the clutch on, yes the chainring bolts are tight, yes I cut the chain to fit properly, yes I've got the little tab on the chainring lined up with the crank arm, yes I've got the chainring the correct way round, and no it's not a stiff link in the chain 🙂

Update... For my second ride with the new drivetrain, I fitted Superstar's round IO Chainring instead of the oval one, and it was spot on. I rode pretty much the same route with the same mud, and didn't drop the chain once.

I bought one of the cheap superstar oval rings after trying a different brand on my mates bike and thinking it seemed ok. I'm not really impressed. I should of known better with it being superstar and the tat they sell. The machining is rough compared to the hope and raceface I normally use and quite a few of the teeth have sharp burrs on the back edge. I wouldn't say this is acceptable regardless of it being cheap. They could be pretty dangerous if you somehow caught a leg on it.
I'm definitely not convinced by the ovalness either. My pedal stroke felt lumpy to start with unlike when I tried a friends which felt weirdly rounder that a round chainring. I guess no science was used by superstar and they either copied someone else’s ring or just randomly picked the shape. I'm used to it now but I don’t notice any benefit and wouldn't buy another.

I don't hate Superstar. I buy their pads, rotors, headsets, pedals and think there stuff is great value for money. Unfortunately their oval IO chainring didn't work for me at all, so I bought one of their round ones to replace it.

Better you paid £15 than £45 to find out you didn't like it then. Quick question, is the tension on your mech enough?

Yep tension on mech is fine. It's a brand new Zee and it works fine with Superstars round IO chainring. As far as I'm concerned its simple, their oval ring doesn't work for me but their round one does.

Mines works perfect 32t io oval even in this Scottish mud bath.

What chain do you have coblck? I've got suspicion that my KMC X10 chain might be part of the problem. The last couple of times I've bought KMC chains because they seem good value and they come with a reusable split link. However I have noticed they are much noisier and grindier than Shimano or SRAM chains when they get muddy. I think they may fit closer on the teeth somehow and/or are worse at shedding mud.

Using kmc chain mate x10-73, always try and use kmc. My other bike 1x11 uses kmc chain but with absolute black oval and I would say it is marginally quieter. Hope that helps
