Evans Cycles (aka Sports Direct) have SLX M7100 brakes at £60 an end, plus £5 P&P.

Evans Cycles

Evans don't have the best reputation but for £55 cheaper than anywhere else I thought I'd take a punt

That looks a great price for a great set of brakes!
I think I paid £130 from Merlin in November for a set, brown boxed oem.

They also have XT cranks in stock for £80, including 170 and 165mm lengths!

Thanks! Just ordered a pair for my old Stumpjumper. The levers on the Elixirs it came with are wrecked.

Will be interesting to see if they actually turn up, at that price!

Apparently they've been shipped! For some reason it looks like they were packed & shipped a day apart, but I don't really care about that, so long as they arrive!

First new proper bike stuff for ages, so quite excited about this! Just hope the current post-mount adaptors that I have got work OK with the calipers!

Thanks for sharing - was needing a set of brakes, these are ideal.

Also spotted SLX M7120 cranks for £60 in 165 and 170 lengths, 55mm chainline, but resisted. Might suit someone else though: https://www.evanscycles.com/brand/shimano/slx-fc-m7120-crank-set-without-ring-712362#colcode=71236211

I believe so, yes.

Strangely they've processed my rear brake but not the front one, despite being part of the same order. Hope I get both as non-matching brakes are a big no-no.

Also cheap Xt 12 speed front mechs and left hand shifters. Lol.

55mm is 148 boost.

Some discounted 29” tyres on there too -£30 spec 2.6s

This is what happened to me. Weird.
But then a couple of days later I had confirmation the other brake had been processed. I've had two lots of shipping updates with different tracking numbers & it looks like both are being delivered today.
I'll update once they(or it) arrive(s)!

Well they only work with chainrings that are compatible with the new shimano direct mount method

That doesn't specifically make them 12 speed only, but I'm not aware of any aftermarket 11 speed rings that fit (not that I've looked really)

I guess you could get one of these https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002925109470.html and use whatever chainring you want

Are they in OEM packaging or retail? Bled and pads included?

Retail I think? Big blue box. Calliper connected to cable but lever separate. Pads included. In a sort of semi-bled state ready to be trimmed with rubber covers over cable holes. Small bag with pad spacer, bolts and cable insert thing.

OK taken a punt on the cranks as I was after some 165s

cheapest I could find a chainring was here https://www.probikekit.co.uk/bicycle-cranksets-and-chainrings/shimano-slx-m7100-m7130-single-chainring-12-speed/12709116.html

so £95 delivered for the lot which was quite good, considering the world we live in and cheaper than RF aeffects which are same weight & pretty bombproof

Other that the link to an adapter from aliexpress, or the Shimano original rings, who makes aftermarket rings for these direct mount cranks?

Brakes have arrived! 2 packages, but delivered at the same time.
Same as above; they are retail packaging with the lever separate from the hose & caliper.

They look sweeeeeet! Can't wait to get them fitted!!

So ... those cranksets ... are they compatible with HT2 BB's? And what does the 55mm chainline mean? I know it means boost, I have non boost wheels spacered out in a boost frame, will that crankset work with those or will the chain line be too far outwards?

Yes, it uses the same bb, the 55mm chainline seems to be what the bike industry is pushing us towards whether we like it or not, some new frames won't allow room for 52mm chainline, it's just making frame designers jobs easier and gives better clearance for fatter tyres, even though I suspect the majority of riders are happy with 2.4 tyres, personally I think 55mm is crap for 148mm boost rear so a 142mm with 3mm boost adapters either side might be noisy, shift worse and wear out quicker.
Considering super boost 157mm uses a 56.5mm chainline whilst pushing the cassette 4.5mm more outboard, 55mm for 148mm seems a bizzare choice.
m7120 or m8120 are 55mm, m7100 or m8100 are 52mm, boost originally was 53mm pre 12sp.
Chainline is the distance from chainring to centre of the bb shell. If that's what your question was.

@woodlikesbikes - magic PSA, thanks fella

I finally ordered this morning, as a terrifying ride on the fat bike (least used) that has ancient and basically completely ineffective 'spare' brakes on it was enough to push me over the edge!

Good PSA - I've had an eye out for a while for a deal on a set of brakes for a while to replace an old pair of Deore M486's on the Singlespeed (the Deores cost £15 an end back in 2013 so owe me nothing and are being kept as spares).

Like others, they arrived in two separate shipments (one day apart) in proper retail packaging and are rather lovely objects.

I got them fitted, the hose routing beautifully optimised etc, bled and ready to roll except to find that the front caliper pees oil everywhere - appears to have a leaking piston seal - thankfully found when given a final check to make sure that the bleed was successful before taking the bleed block out and installing pads. A replacement brake has been ordered and this set are going back to Evans - so fingers crossed that Evans's customer service is not a painful experience.

Do they need much of a bleed after fitting ? Got mine yesterday and will hopefully pop them on tomorrow

Not fitted minde yet but I picked up some 6100 brakes this time last year which were a similar setup. The worked pretty well straight out the box. Did a lever bleed after a few rides which just formed them up a little.

They appear to be full of oil, albeit it the hose is not connected to the lever and if you're careful and lucky you might be able to assemble them without much air getting in the system.

I didn't even both trying to get away without bleeding them though, as whilst fitting them is the perfect time to do it, you then know they're right and it only takes 5 mins an end.

You can fit them without bleeding, though I did a quick lever only bleed on mine

Slip rubber boot on cable
Cut cable
Put barb in
Remove yellow thing from lever and push cable in (olive already in there)
Tighten up
Then remove the plastic thing that stops you pressing lever.

I've fitted my lever to the bar but there's a support part that rests against the grip which in turn pushes my gear shifter too far over when sitting next to the clamp. It makes the shifters pretty unworkable and cramped under the lever. Am I being daft or is there a way around this?

Aren’t they i-spec levers? So you should be able to use a common clamp for brakes and shifter

@gordon what shifter have you got? You can get brackets to mount the shifter directly to the brake clamp to tidy it all up. The brakes are I-spec EV so you may need an adapter depending on your shifter. Wolftooth do a range. Otherwise some shifters allow you to move the shifter body left/right on the band so check to see if your can. Or could you mount the shifter further outboard with its clamp between the brake clamp and the support?

Thanks for the replies. 2010 Deore m6100 I think. I had a look at putting the shifter between the clamp and support but the shifter housing is too big. There's no adjustment on the shifters so I'll have a look at those adapters. Cheers.

Argghh… how come I can only find one half of the little yellow hose holder for barb installation in my toolbox.. 🙄

Ordered and will regroup later in the week !

@gordon, that’s a shame. If it is a 2010 vintage then there isn’t an adapter as the shifter clamp cannot be removed. Probably best to get a new shifter that will fit the I-spec EV. The SL-M4100 is available for <£30 if you are 10-speed.

I've not fitted these yet & am now a bit concerned. I did notice the clamp looked non-conventional (i.e, a straight forward split-band style clamp).

Are these gonna play nicely with my 10 year old 3x9 shifters, or be an absolute pain in the arse? Do I need to fit them to find out? Maybe it's a case of them being OK with some set-ups & not others? I don't want to fit them & then realise I can't get them set-up how I want them.

I looked on the website description & couldn't see anything that describes the clamp type so assumed they were just normal clamps, rather than this i-spec EV mumbo jumbo....

Forgot to post earlier but my £80 cranks arrived earlier this week, full retail jobbies, with lockring and box etc. RRP of £145 on the box. Well pleased.

New XT even come with invisiframe style tape on them from the factory to stop them polising through!

What about the lockring tool, if you haven't already got one, the blue ones on ebay for around £7 made by risk work great.

@breninbeener Probikekit have the XT 30tooth in stock cheaper than anywhere else. Thats what I bought. Free postage too.

55mm chainline does seem a bit wild!
I have a few spacers kicking about so might try and shim the cranks over a bit if it's a problem
But really pleased so far

(mine didn't come with the chainring tool it's supposed to, but at this price Ill live with it!

A Blackspire snaggletooth ring reduces chainline by 1mm and its reversible so running it the other way turns a M8100 to 55mm chainline, is there anything out there to turn an M8120 into 52mm chainline.

55mm is 148 boost.

It is not, but Shimano seem to be pushing it with their latest offerings
They do in XT for example:

52mm for 142/148 rears
55mm for 148 rears
56.5mm for 157 rears.

Depends on frame also. Some frames spec 55mm for 148 rear, but rear is offset 3mm.

55mm front on a 148 symmetrical rear gives a horrible chain line when in the lower (dinner plate sprockets).

@gordon - Are your shifters ones with the windows telling you what gear you are in? and do you actually use this....

If so, you should be able to remove the window and fit a blaking plate, which would then mean that your shifter would fit between the brake mount and grip.

Ads678, yes, they have the windows. I did wonder if I could do something like that as its the window part that takes up space. I'll have a look for backing plates, good shout, thanks!

Just been looking at the levers on the M7100 and the clamp is in a different place to my older SLX M7000 and M675 levers, the clamp on the new levers is exactly where I would want my rear shifter and dropper lever to be. Weird.

Righto. Am going to fit my brakes today. Never fitted new brakes, and will need to shorten the rear hose. Can someone give me an easy step by step process to fit these, ideally without needing to bleed them? Do I fit on the bike, or on a flat surface and then install onto the bike?

And, I've seen people refer to a lever bleed. What does that mean and how do I do it?

Thanks.

I fitted levers and calipers to the bike, worked out where the hoses needed cutting to and cut them with a stanley knife on the work bench. Clamped the hose with yellow blocks that I already had and pushed the inserts in. Then inserted hoses into the levers and tighten up the nuts. Didn't need to bleed.

What’s that little red SRAM widget called that allows you to join two hydraulic hoses together? I already have one somewhere in the shed, but I can’t find it and need to order another. Got some of these brakes when the PSA was announced (thanks OP), but need to fit the rear on my internally routed Merida Big Trail winter bike.
