I tried to Buy a Stem off a guy in the classifieds, and when I paid, I sent it by PayPal but included extra to cover fees (he asked for gift but I dont trust that method as a buyer !)

Anyway, he refused the payment saying it was his friends account. And he would only accept PayPal Gift (bollx)

The users account is here along with all the stuff he has for sale.

http://singletrackmag.com/forum/profile/lnelson123

And when I googled the Paypal email address he asked me to make payment to, I found this :

It's been said time and time again - never buy from someone with no posting history apart from selling stuff.

I am no money down, as he wouldn't accept a proper paypal payment.

Just warning others as he has a fair few things for sale.

TTGVayZaa@hotmail.co.uk avoid this email as well as lnelson123@hotmail.com.
Unfortunately I lost my cash for being stupid, I will do my hardest to get it resolved.
Paypal name is Sean madden.
So paypal gift payments are a loss with no resolution?
And can mods not remove account?

not sure if mods can do this, but more effective would be to mark him scammer to other logged in users. banning, he can just sign up again presumably. i'm thinking something like the "p" tag that paying users have now.

I'm all for a good witch-hunt but how are you linking Danny Madden wanting to buy forks to Sean Madden, the name of the apparent Paypal scammer? OK they have the same surname but is that it or am I missing something?

Surely it's about time STW did something about the scammers on here?
Is it really that difficult to make a sticky thread with the usernames and email addresses of known scammers?
Would it be such a bad idea that selling in the classifieds becomes a Premier user only thing? At least that way there's records of sellers details from when they signed up.

I had problems on here with someone trying to scam me for £260 not so long back, thankfully I got it sorted in the end but others aren't so lucky.

I emailed lneleson123 asking for pictures of a Fox jersey and highroller he's been selling - he replied:

From: Lee Nelson
Subject: RE: FS Fox Jersey Brand New Medium Men
No Problem Paul, the Jersey is brand new.
And my Phone is currently in repair as the screen is cracked, so it will take a few days to get a picture up somehow!
When i figure out a way to get pictures without my phone ill email you asap, cant promise nothing though, expecting these to sell fast!
Thanks.

Well first off

MAKE REQUESTING PAYMANT BY PAYPAL GIFT A INSTANT BAN.

make this very clear all over the classifieds.

then no one with good intensions will ask for it.

This could be done today.

MAKE REQUESTING PAYMANT BY PAYPAL GIFT A INSTANT BAN

Nonsense. I've used it loads of times. Bank transfer is just as unprotected. buyers just have to be more cautious.

There's a difference between using it and making it mandatory on a purchase though. If people want to take the risk of gifting to save themselves the fees then that's their shout but otherwise they should assume the price in the ad doesn't include paypal fees if they chose to use a normal paypal payment.

People just ned to be sensible about who they buy from. Use common sense, look at peoples selling history and their forum history. I know that makes it more difficult for people who's never sold before but thats the way I play it.

I've never had a problem with Paypal Gift when buying or selling.

Its my default payment method. This all comes down to buyer beware!!

If the OP had checked the seller out properly then he might not have pursued further.

Banning Paypal gift payments will alienate quite a few

Why nonsense?
What dosen't make sense about that to you?
Why not make it clear cut?
system works well on other forums

Remember Gift is just who it says on the tin, you are giving away your money.

Speshpaul - don't take this the wrong way, but why not take repsonsibility for your own actions? If you don't want to pay using PayPal as a gift pay then pay the extra fees for protection. It's no big deal.

Sellers are just trying to their their stuff at a price that's good for them and low for the buyer. Most people on here are genuine.

I agree it would be easy enough for the mods to tweak the backend admin to visually highlight a known scammer, but it would probably be better to just delete their account.

That's the point isn't it. Scammers have cottoned onto the fact that we trade with each other on here with a degree of trust involved. If you know the seller or buyer has been a long term member then your good to go.

I do have sympathy with anyone who's scammed but as mentioned before buyer beware.

These days on here
I never buy off 'unknowns' or classifieds only users
I never pay [or ask for] by PPG - no one has yet refused or insisted I pick up their PP fees.

their PP fees

Come on, when I sell something on here I'm not trading as a business. I'm a bloke with a rear mech lying around in my shed. PP fees aren't an overhead of my global enterprise, they protect the seller. Why should I pay for that?

Why don't buyers just post on the 'for sale' thread after the item has been received and they are happy with the sale? That way its easy to check if the buyer is genuine or not by checking forum history. Its a simple feedback system.

Buying blind, without checking the user out is a bit daft.

I do, why would I accept 4% less (or however much it is now) than I was asking for?

If someone want's to pay by non-gift paypal then that's fine, but i'd expect them to pay the fee as it offers sweet FA to the seller.

Used PPG lots of times. No problems at all.
Although I tend to steer clear of unknowns, classifieds only users and newly registered memebers with no posting history on here. Probably missed out on a few good deals through being over-cautious. But I've not lost any money as a result!
If it seems too good to be true invariably it is! If you're really worried insist on std PayPal pick up the extra fees and away you go. If the seller objects then they've clearly got something to hide.
Expecting the mods to monitor the classifieds, whilst a nice thought, isn't going to happen.
Use some common sense and good judgement.

"Speshpaul - don't take this the wrong way, but why not take repsonsibility for your own actions?"

Hard not to as you have mentioned me by name and suggested i don't take responsibility for my own actions.
On what do you base you accusation?

Anyways, in general i apply all of the rules and top tips mentioned above and i will gift to people i "know".

But that isn't really the issue. STW is seen as a place where scammers can scam by using the Gift scam.
That is a fact, its happening all the time.
It will get a rep for it (as other forums have) and if you sell on here asking for gift you run the risk of being tarred with the same brush.

So why not stop it?

and if you want to stop it, whats the simplest way?

Ban the use of paypal Gift.

the scammers will go else where until they find a new scam.
By allowing it to continue we are allowing them to scam.

pictures pictures pictures. the OP had it right, as did the jersey and tyres guys.

ask for a picture, next to something you randomly choose, or that day's paper for example.

wont guarantee you wont get scammed, but a good start that they actually have the bits!

I think that there should be changes made to the classifieds. At the moment it's too open for abuse. I have bought and sold off here mostly without problems but I think STW could still help a little.

Let's close off the classifieds forum for people with less than a certain postcount (for example)

Or limit the use of the classifieds to those who are premium members? This may also entice more premium members in!

I use the classifieds a lot less than I used to due to the number of people who come on to this site just to sell. It doesn't feel as community based as it did.

There a question of web traffic here, STW aren't going to do anything that potentially lowers the hit count.

Sorry speshpaul, if my post wasn't clear enough.

I don't think banning Paypal gift is the answer to preventing people being scammed on the classifieds.
I have personally used Paypal gift as a buyer and seller to avoid fees and never had a problem. Other times I have used bank transfer, which also offers no protection and not had any issues.

Banning Paypal gift payments is not going to solve the issue. Most of the time it's not mentioned in the ads anyway, only in the emails, so how the hell could you ban it??

Aye, you need to checkout the buyers posts, sadly. I 'bought' a pair of gloves recently, guy claims they got lost in the post, and because I used PayPal gift, I'm snookered. Was only £7, but lesson learned. He only posts in classifieds as well, but I have a mate who buys and sells a lot of stuff, and doesn't really post on here, so there are genuine guys who only use the classifieds.

But there has been one scammer who was a premier member, and any mention of this gets deleted by the mods. Rather like diplomatic immunity!

Nearly bought some forks a week or so back but the seller only had half a dozen posts over the last year or so, all selling.

There was nothing to say he was a scammer and I don't believe that he was. However as others have said, "buyer beware". I didn't need any potential hassle so I let them pass. Pity really as they were a very tidy set of forks.

On the other hand I've bought from a few regulars and never had a problem. Trust your instinct I suppose.

Getting into MTB would not have been possible for my wife and I without these Classifieds.
I've built up two bikes all from parts off here.

So far I've had such a brilliant experience as a buyer and all the people I've sold to seem to be happy. I really hope I haven't jinxed it now!

There's some wise words here about checking history, exchanging a few e-mails prior to purchase to 'get a feel' for the person and just generally trusting your instinct.
I hope honesty wins in the end and the scammers are weeded out somehow.

A quick google can help for email, mine probably would bring up Facebook, twitter, I use the same username for Ebay and most places, a scammer usually uses a few site and it can be easy to find a paper trail.

If its too cheap or looks suspect it generally is,

I've been on STW for years and have only been burnt on the classifieds a couple of times and not for much.
Now I only really use STW as a place to buy and sell as the "old school" users have slowly faded away and the conversation/opinions tend to annoy me more than educate me. Life is too short to get involved.
Saying that I'm honest and would hate to think people would be wary of buying from me just because I don't dribble opinions on the site much!

When I have sold things on here I always use good old fashioned telephone and cheque method. I always require home address work address and telephone numbers. You can easily look up addresses on google map. I always call the person on their given telephone numbers and find out more info. If we are both happy then I just ask for a cheque. If you pay by cheque they have to give you an address where to send it. Check it is a proper address where they can be reached. Then if they are a scammer you can go round and sort things out with a suitable pair of marzocchis !

Pictures. Other forums (non biking) I have used to buy and sell stuff insist on pictures in the post (why sellers insist on emailing them instead of using photo bucket is beyond me!) with a hand written note in the shot with their username and current date.

Seemed to work well in cutting down the scams.

@Radioman - insisting on cheques probably cuts your buyer pool down, I know I wouldn't bother, but I guess if it works for you...

I can see us not only needing pictures soon but a copy of the day's newspaper + our forum name in it as well as evidence :p

I've been scammed twice in the last month on the classifieds. Once by Bridger2 who took my money over a month ago but never posted the goods out and has since disappeared - blaming myself for that as it was his first, and only, post. Secondly by Alexandro who paid for a phone by PPG, accepted and acknowledged delivery, then reversed the payment. Paypal actually took the money back out of my account so he now has my phone, and his money back!!

I agree with andyhilton - make it so only Premium usres can sell/buy on the classifieds.

I only accept cheque or bank credit transfer and always make that clear if I'm selling anything. Never had a problem with that, ie nobody has said 'shove it' 😉

People really need to do their research to check out the buyer/seller and ask questions. If in doubt then don't!

I understand the issue very well. You can't do a basic bit of research or ask the right questions to find out if you are dealing with a genuine seller or a con artist. Instead you wish that Paypal, the Mods, your mum or anyone else protect you from doing something stupid.
If you want a risk free way of buying goods from others stick to the shops and mail order for your protection.

Bought and sold by PPG regularly over the last 5 years with no problems. But I also accept that if there is a problem then that's my own fault.
Well, if 'trusting people' is a fault.

I agree that making the classifieds Premier would force me to join.

Why not just add a feedback section on a member's profile: would it be such a hard thing to code?

Failing that, when buying why not update the 'selling' post with the outcome? At least it would show up in a search...

I've bought and sold a fair bit on here, made a few donations and now subscribed as a thank you. People who tend to be polite and friendly by email tend to be in real life. Arsey, impatient or trite emails at the start means I don't take the sale/purchase any further. Hardly a perfect system but it is free...

Its not ebay so you cant link a 'sale' to a bit of feedback so it would have to be an open system and there are enough arguments on here already (even in this thread) which could lead to inappropriate 'feedback' being left for one or more posters. A bit like the 'tags' issue a while back.
