The issue isn't that the seatpost will move, it's that the seatpost isn't properly supported.

The clamp should really only there to stop the seatpost moving up and down, not to stop the seatpost flexing backwards and forwards about the clamping area (which will eventually crack the frame).

The london road debacle gets worse!

While cleaning my new London road to day I discovered this hole in a weld on the seat stay bridge

How bad is it ? I think its a replacement frame job what do you think?

The problem is I have completely lost faith in the product there are so many problems with this frame set I wonder what it will be like in 3 years time or will i have a catastrophic failure.

Still gettting nowhere sorting mine out. They said they'd measured the seat tube at 31.59mm so i sent them pics as they requested, and they appear to have stopped responding :/

Stating the obvious, why not just use the 31.8mm post?

If he wanted a bike with a 31.8 seatpost he'd have bought one I guess? It's not a common size, so limits choice of seatpost.

Because good quality reasonably priced 31.8mm posts aren't exactly common, there isn't a single one listed on Chainreaction cycles. Most of the ones on eBay seem to be cheap/heavy or unbranded Chinese carbon ones. It's not the sort of quality you'd expect on a 300 pound frameset either.

Well obviously that's the solution although as he said already the post belongs to his Brompton.

I think he's more annoyed at the general pissing about, PX pretending they "measured" it and general bluffing and bullshitting, all for him to then establish the facts for himself, the real question is what resolution do you want?

-Another Replacement frame with a 31.6 ID tube?
-A free 31.8 seat post?
-full refund and apology?

That weld is sh*te, that frame it shouldn't have passed the QA/QC checks at the factory. However I do think it should be plenty strong enough.

I have owned
3 kona
3 cannondale
2 giant
2 GT
1 specialized
2 trek
1 ebc
1 surly
1 thorn
1 onone
1 planet x

never have I had such poor workmanship as this Planet X product.

and you fan boys say these faults don't matter 😯 so they can get away with poor goods and their next frame set will be made with an even cheaper manufacturer with even poorer quality control because we the customers said its ok.

get your tongue's out of PX's ass.

Considering some of you call yourselves cyclists, I'd have expected you to have a bit of nous/improvisation in you.

get your tongue's out of PX's ass.

Easy sugar, nobody's condoning their shoddiness or tonguing anuses...

Just being practical really, I don't personally fancy all the faff and bother other's have had to go through, ultimately failing to get the frame "Sorted" or chasing a replacement/refund with PX, so I've opted for my own solution (31.8mm post from fleabay) which is a compromise that works (for me), all in my build has cost me ~£300 which would buy you a Pinnacle Arkose frameset as an "appropriate equivalent" from an alternative more reputable supplier...
So financially I'm doing OK on the deal, I've got more for my money than I would have otherwise, the gamble, and it is a gamble, is hoping I won't have to call on PX for any sort of support...

The low Price (£150) was all that made me (and everyone else probably) buy it in the first place, I'd never have expected to get this sort of frameset for this money normally, so yeah I'm a little more determined to make it work on that basis, otherwise I would have either bought a kaffenback frameset for the same price or I was looking at modifying an old steel Kona MTB frame for similar purposes.

Thus far I'm happy, but I'm approaching it "eyes wide open"...

If you're upset send it back. Personnally I bought a cheap frame and forks and have a great bike. Yeah maybe I should send it back but where would that get me? I'd just have a load of bits and no frame, then I'd have to buy another f&f and that would cost me more. I'm not looking to break any records on it and it does what I need it to very well.

Now go and pick your teddy back up and play like a nice boy.

fwiw, i've checked a few 27.2 seatposts in my Arkrose frame, it's like a wizard's sleeve.

what am i going to do?

use a 400mm seat-post, and forget about it, that's what.

If you look carefully at the picture you can see in the area of the hole there is less weld, so Mr welder had a bad day or was distracted maybe this is the first time his little company has worked for PX or even the first time they have worked with bike frames or Aluminium .....maybe some peoples bottom brackets and head tubes have similar poor welds, but hey its all ok because Planet X are cool and sometimes they talk to you like your real people and not just walking ATM's.

Other'n being ugly. It's more indicative though, slipshod/low quality work that's got past qc. This particular ropey weld will be fine in use, are there more, will they?

Lets be honest here, on a bike you can easily do excess of 40 mph and a poor quality weld failing at that speed could have horrific consequences. This isn't 1930 or even 1970, companies should have good QA/QC procedures and meet them. Personally if I were Planet-X no matter if the integrity of the weld is okay, I'd be embarrassed by the quality and replace it without a quibble.

Planet X have refused to do anything.

I bought the bike as a light tourer its in the advertising I quote

"The London Road covers so many bases it almost seems unfair to your other bikes. It has proven itself to be a capable and comfortable winter trainer when dressed in mudguards and an exemplary commuter and tourer with the addition of panniers and a rack. "

soo I am going to load it with panniers and tent on the rear rack and head off into the distance with a very wary eye on the welds.

Gazc, so other than being smart arsed about an issue and it's solutions that have been discussed at length (as you've been paying attention you'll have seen P-X recommending against shims in case of future problems), how many bikes do you own and how many of them needed shimming because they were out of spec?

And what other remedial steps to you believe are acceptable for a brand new frame?

To be honest, if I'd ended up with one of these frames and PX were giving me the run around, I wouldn't let it lie. Simple fact is they or their fabricators have screwed up and PX are trying to weasel out of their responsibility to fix the problem.

Suggesting that using a 31.6mm seatpost, in a tube that will easily take a 31.8mm post, won't create problems further down the line is pretty laughable. Verging on the absurd is then advising against using a seatpost shim to rectify the problem because it may cause future issues!?!?! I guess that's why their warranty is only 2 years.

It's a PR disaster anyway.

Whats all this fanboy bollocks about?
Some people bought a frame cos it was cheap and are not that precious about it. To be fair if it cracks in warranty they'll have to replace it if, it cracks out of warranty, well it was cheap who gives a shit!!

I would be gutted if i'd paid full price, but i didn't.

Anyway this thread needs to go to bed...........

My 31.8 testing post (14€ @ ebay) just has arrived and it does not fit 😉

My Thomson 31.6 (and i do believe that they really can do this in perfect) is not as tight as i'd like a post to be, i just took the old trick back from the 90s and stuffed it with a coke can. Works for me, let's see how long this lasts.

ATM i just keep the frame as it was cheap...no beauty, no high quality thingy...but ok in general.

But this isn't a cheap bike .. It's a reduced bike there is a difference!

They won't replace it in warranty if you cranked the seat clamp up and it cracks so good luck there 🙂

This thread will be put to bed when Planet X have some decency to respond to some people.

Right, and that's the point...

I just bought because it was reduced...otherwise it would have been an Arkose frameset 😉

Ditto: I was looking at a Ridgeback panorama and Genesis equilibrium and would have not purchased the LR had it not been reduced so i feel conned.
I would have happily stumped up the difference had i known what I was in for,I was looking for a frame to last for the rest of my cycling day's and I don't feel that that's what I got.

What in your opinion is a reasonable resolution?

I'm happy with mine for what I paid for it and so are others it seems. Only seem to be 1 or 2 that are not happy.

PX have responded to my emails and I have them for my records, so as I said before if it cracks within warranty they don't have a leg to stand on. Out of warranty? Well if i get 2 years out of a £150 frame i'll not lose any sleep. Its cheaper than bus fair!!

It seems some people have paid 150, and are happy to shim it or find a 31.8 seatpost to resolve the issue. This is fine, i'd probably be the same.

But that doesn't mean other people, who may have paid full price, are being unreasonable in expecting Planet-X to supply a frame with the correct size seat tube, or a refund - which they are refusing to do (at least for me).

I won't be using them again.

What in your opinion is a reasonable resolution?

That they supply what they advertised or provide a refund. These were not "seconds" of inferior quality. They were advertised as sale items. Combined with the usual Planet X/On One exemplary customer service its shambolic. An absolute farce.
Accepting it and bodging to make it work means the next frames they sell on the cheap will be exactly the same poor quality as these.
According to some on this thread, thats fine.

Maybe you could swap the baggyness for a bit of the lack of tyre clearance on the El Guapo 29er? Or club together and buy O-O/P-X a ruler.

Why do you think they were reduced to £150? They probably knew they had an issue with this batch so are selling them off cheap.

If you are not happy send it back under the distance selling rules. If they don't play ball then have a chat to your credit card company and put a claim in.

I do however agree that Planet X should have a solution such as sending out free shims. It's not like they are expensive.

Don't get me wrong Iolo, i think PX are out of order for not giving you a refund as the frame is not 'as advertised'. I just don't think it's fair that some people seem to have a attitude towards the ones on here that are happy to accept the frame as it is and get on with it.

I also accept that they were not advertised as seconds but they are very cheap. Even at full price they are not expensive so I would not expect Pinarello standards. Buts that's just me.

I'm not happy that my seat post choices are limited because of the larger diameter seat tube but I just don't see it as a massive deal as it's relatively cheap bike for commuting duties, and can be made to work perfectly fine for not a lot.

PX did say to me that they are thinking of supplying this frame with a 31.8mm seat post as standard from now on, but also do not have any in stock! I do think they should send one out FOC to every one that has bought the frame though.

Even at full price they are not expensive so I would not expect Pinarello standards.

They aren't that cheap really though £300 for a frame that doesn't even come with a headset. It's the frame for a bike that'll come in around £900-1200 depending on groupset. The build quality on a Trek, Giant, Spesh etc. around the same price point will be way better.

Off topic from the other discussions that are going on.
I've just put my 105 5700 levels on and correct me I'm being stupid but I'm going to need longer brake cables than the supplied ones aren't I?

Does anyone had any recommendations for some reasonably priced ones?

Chain line is Alfine default (42,x or something)

Without the pulley, it's silent. I'll just ordered the Alfine tensioner to try.

It's going very well actually FBW, I've used it to do the Kennet tow path a few times now and I've used it for some mixed on/off-road type rides around Ufton/Mortimer/Silchester ways, and took a bit of a detour via Greenham Common - Woolhampton on my way home the other week.

I sort of end up riding along on the roads just looking for opportunities to dive off into some woods...

Riding it offroad it sort of reminds me of my first couple of MTBs, rigid, nippy fun ot zip about on al sorts of surfaces, nothing like the comfort and grip of a modern MTB, but that's not really the point is it...

The 35C nobby nicks are OK, they roll better than I expected them to on Tarmac, can squirm a little offroad, I will have to try and run them tubeless soon I think.

The Gearing is OK, still using the 34T ring, which is good for climbing but I've not yet actually needed to go all the way up to the 32T out back, not really worried about spinning out but a little more top end would be nice, So I still need to change that, but there's no rush it's more of pootle than charge! type machine.

I have reverted to the fixie for commuting this week as it's a bit drizzly (Guards) and the road route is still a solid 15-20 minutes quicker each way...

the LR is going to be brilliant for riding round here come winter, especially the odd night time on/off road blast I reckon, the sort of thing I used to use my SS MTB for...

Reckon we should organise a West Berk's/South Oxon chapter STW Gravel ride soon...

Edit:

[img] [/img]

Here you go, Nonchalantly leant against some railings down by the Kennet...

cookeaa, as an Oxfordshire-based non-London Road owner, you missed this (or maybe you didnt)

I did miss it, but I like the look of the route, I've picked up the Ridgeway from Streatley before but not followed it that west far, or looped round Lambourne Downs, I think I might just try and find the time to do it anyway,

Cheers....

been watching the tdf.. 🙂

Superb & yeah riding the rough surfaced lanes/tracks & towpath around here the bike is comfortable & quite responsive. Fitted with a 34/50t compact & smooth tread tyres is more road bias.

@cookeaa - keeping it simple with a single chainring = less maintenance, for off-road 34t is similar to riding a 29er and that range of gearing which I would think is ok. No likewise Wasn't expecting the drizzle/rain yesterday and this morning but not keen on mudguards in summer as a rule though! (probably fit about end september ish)

Great link; white road sportif and route info. keen to ride that!.. been doing lots of riding over Compton,Aldworth,Goring with "workmates team" - good idea cookeaa to set up a "gravel grouprides syndicate"

I did the White Roads Classic (another West Berks rider here), Scott CR1, 28mm Schwalbe One tubeless, 80psi. Slightly bumpy and the off-road stuff probably more fun on a grrrrvvvl bike but it's mainly a road route with a few byway sections.

Good event, nice and small, excellent food, prosecco at the finish, friendly people riding.

Shimano 105 5700, Deda post and stem, FSA omega compact bars and wheels and discs off a Boardman cx comp that I got a good deal from a fellow forumite on. First post, Hi all!

Been reading this thread intently as I've just ordered myself one of the last £150 frames that they had which I'll be building up as a winter roadie with some possible light touring duties, basically it's to become my main bike so my Tarmac can become my 'sunday best'.

I read all the issues people were having with the headsets and I did some digging, the SHIS ID number for the headset appears to be: IS42/28.6 | IS52/40

I've found a few options for headsets that should fit that are cheaper than the FSA option, hopefully it might help somebody out:

Cheap shop brand:

Richtey Comp: Top and Bottom (pick the ones that match the SHIS number)

Richtey WCS: Top and Bottom (pick the ones that match the SHIS number)

And the FSA one...

Hopefully this helps someone!

Also.. has anyone had any experiences with Shimano's CX77 brakes? I'm kitting my build out with 105 5700 so I figured keeping with shimano brakes would help everything work together nicely. I've heard apparently the newer brakes/levels (5700/6700 onwards) have a different 'pull ratio' from older stuff and it's all optimised to work together.

One more thing! Have people found the rear brake works better when you run a full length outer to it? Thinking it might be worth doing for the rear brake and mech as this bike is going to be going out whatever the weather and my club have a habbit sometimes of using the kind of tracks you probably shouldn't take a road bike with skinny tyres!

The Frame is designed to use full length outer/hose for the rear brake, make sure you get non-compression outer...

I am using full length outer for the rear mech you can piggyback it on the brake ties then tape and zip tie it along the Chainstay, doesn't look very neat, and you are left with unused cable adjuster bosses at the top of the downtube...

Sounds like a good option, cheers! I notice PX do rolls of cable outer, might have to get some.

CX77s as good as BB7s for me - I use both. Latter easier to adjust tho.

Different question for othe LR owners;

Is anyone making use of the "low-rider" bosses ~1/3rd of the way up either fork leg?

I want a way to carry dry bags and that position is more out of the way. A nice minimal low rider rack or something like an anything cage that could pick up on those bosses would be great... anyone?

Aren't they mudguard drillings? Might not be in the right place for the traditional low rider type panniers (or indeed up the job of carry that sort of load).

I use mine for mudguard fittings, seem sturdy enough. SKS Touring 45s.

My LR's had some amazing trips in the last few weeks. Much of the SDW, 220mile ride Dunwich dynamo double, Hilly road day touring in wet Scotland, then Ride London @ 34.9kph average. All on Compass Barlow Extralight 38c tyres tubeless.

Somebody interested in Versa VRS 11 brifters?
