Lived in the north of Scotland for 8 years... Not once did I see the northern lights...
Saw them in Macclesfield about 15 years ago, didn't know what they where thought they were a light show from Tatton Park until it came in the radio the next morning.
Saves me a trip to the artic
Visible in Wester Ross at about 3:30am. Not a particularly spectacular display here, but it's there.
