You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Shame to miss out at 85, they're the best brakes around by far and I'd like another 3 brakes ideally.
Looks like I just scraped in at the lower price.
Will feedback in a couple of weeks, depending on the weather...
Glad they’ve gone up, saved me from myself 😂
The offer has changed as well as the price, you snooze you lose, I thought they would have sold out by now, they must have a boat load.
I'll remain happy that I got them at the 95 price, still a bangin deal.
What rotors are people using successfully with them? Currently got some well used 'resin only' shimano ones on my wheels which I am pretty sure will not be any good with these. Keep reading that they need thicker rotors.
I'm running Magura Storm HC rotors 2mm thick and pretty good price. I paid sub 25 at local bike shop. No stock at CRC but at least you can see.

Over the last 3 yrs of use, I don't really notice any difference between 2mm+ rotors or more normal thicknesses (1.8mm or something like that?).
FWIW, I think the Hayes rotors do work well with them, as have standard SRAM rotors, cheapy floating ones from eBay etc etc. But for now, I really like the Galfer Wave 2mm discs. Nice and quiet with their green pads.
Keep reading that they need thicker rotors.
I presume this refers to thicker than most rotors, rather than thicket than the standard 1.95mm ones. I have those and wouldn't like to try thicker, especially when pads are new. They scraped for a bit after a bit of slightly muddy water, and was tricky to refit the front wheel after transport for a few rides.
Those crosshair screws to help align them are there due to how close to the rotors they run, not because the designers thought it'd be nice. The high leverage ration that gives them their power, also means the pistons don't move a lot hence needing to be close to the rotor.
Do these work with shimano adaptors?
Also can anyone recommend some centerlock discs to go with them? Thanks
Something coming tomorrow 4.4.2023 from Hayes, according to their Instagram.
Might be a 223mm rotor, although the one in the background here looks like a 160mm. Or purple A4s.

Something to spend the PB win on then?
Rachel Atherton had some pink/purple Hayes brakes on her bike at Dyfi yesterday, maybe just a colour or maybe something more than that?
There a purple run Limited to i think 400 units
Meh. So nothing useful like 220mm rotors then.
So had a good few runs with these on and i am seriously impressed. very easy to bleed and set up.
I love the feel of them. Loads of modulation and power. I is happy 🙂
Do these work with shimano adaptors?
Unfortunately not - I've just discovered.
I bought two sets, one for a new build and one for son no. 1. I didn't get the super cheap price but given the feedback on here I'n still happy. Thanks for the PSA @noeffsgiven
I’m having some problems sourcing replacement barbs and olives for a set of Dominion A4’s - I ordered some but they leak 😭.
A few people in this thread have mentioned different options. I thought I'd summarise what's been mentioned in case it's useful for anyone else...
-
BACKGROUND
It seems Hayes have moved from a 1-piece design to a 2-piece setup. However, it’s virtually impossible to source any of the 2-piece variants, and the 1-piece versions are all third party versions.
Hayes require different sized Olives from Shimano, SRAM, Tetra etc.
-
OPTIONS
@bornonaboat and @bikesandboots mentioned buying Elvedes ELV-HY02 as spares, from Hobson Cycles or Ebay.
@big_scot_nanny mentioned these generic 5.4mm generic version from a Chinese eBay seller.
@blastit mentioned using 5.5mm olives (but the eBay link provided is now dead)
@doomanic mentioned ordering some olives from eBay, but didn't mention the exact ones.

WHAT DEFINITELY WORKS?
For those who've sourced replacements, can you confirm if they've worked without issue?
Thanks!
I found this at the weekend whilst looking to update my stock of spares for my new equipment. I didn't have any luck, and took a punt on some ebay single piece ones.
TBH they don't look wildly different in size or application from any of the others. Its a part that is smooshed to fit in a confined space, and even bodging something from a combination of spares has never failed me over the years. Sometimes it just needs another turn or two on the compression nut to get it all to deform adequately.
I'm not surprised its like this. Hayes spares have always been scarce and expensive this side of the pond.
Has anyone stuggled with a brake adaptor to fit?
My shimano one doesn't and all the blurb for post mount 180 to 203 says I need a PM7 bracket, but its too short.
WHAT DEFINITELY WORKS?
For those who’ve sourced replacements, can you confirm if they’ve worked without issue?
OK, you got me checking - the ones I actually bought were these single piece ones: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/303650650762 , and I can confirm they definitely work, and in fact used on the CRC mucho cheapo brakes off of this PSA.
However, on Dominions over the years I have found that it is important to use a new compression/shroud nut with a new barb/olive. That does present some challenges, as most nuts are fine for Shimano (thinner) hoses, but can be a bit of a challenge the for the thicker Hayes hose. Not impossible, but challenging. Finding Hayes specific ones can be tricky.
@Scienceofficer Re adapters - I think it was mentioned earlier that Shimano ones are too shallow to allow the caliber to fit. I've used both magura and uberbike post mount 180-203 or 220 (or 223 with 1.5mm washers) without issue.
HTH!
heck, I'd better be accurate - for 180-203 I've only used Magura https://www.tredz.co.uk/.Magura-QM-44-Adapter-PM-180-203mm_244263.htm
For 180-220 I used Uberbike. The Uberbike 180-203 may work, but I haven't tried.
The brakes are awesome, but not being as mainstream as the Big Ss or Hope etc means there is a faff penalty.
Stick with it, braking nirvana awaits 🙂
I've already got 2 adaptors that dont fit.
I'll get the Magura one. Then, since its worked for you I know if it doesn't fit I've got an issue.
Grateful for the detail.
I've got by so far by spacing with washers between the caliper and mount on the front for a 203mm rotor and grinding down an old +20mm adapter to clear the caliper for the rear 180mm rotor.
Been a bit of a ball ache to get these up and running but they are superb once you get there.
Waiting on some Magura QM40 and QM44 adapters from R2 bike to get them mounted without bodges..... Confirmed to work on the below thread....
I have Magura storm 2mm rotors to, less lever throw then on the thinner Shimano rotors.
https://www.mtbr.com/threads/caliper-adapters-for-hayes-dominion-a4.1156071/
and @bikesandboots mentioned buying Elvedes ELV-HY02 as spares

I've not used them as the brakes came with 2-piece olives in the box. So no more to say than before:
Aside from being 1 piece, they’re exactly the same as the spares that came in the box, on all dimensions I can imagine taking with my digital calipers.
Hotlines really are poor with their range of spares https://www.hotlines-uk.com/Products/SearchProduct?searchstring=hayes. Utter half arsed cowboys:
BUT, trying to source spare parts is almost impossible, hotlines the importer is no use and will try to sell you lifeline hose kits which are a smaller bore than the original and not recommened by Hayes, I actually managed to get Hayes europe to send me an original hose kit but if I need another it maybe a struggle.
Are we saying the best brakes in the world require a special adapter to clear the caliper and you can't find the 2 piece olive/inserts in stock .
Yes x2. I read somewhere that adapter manufacturers have deviated from some standard spec, but Magura and Hope haven't so you have to use those given Hayes' own can't be found.
Oh they are actually listing the Hayes adapter now, but product page only half loads https://www.hotlines-uk.com/Products/SearchProduct?SearchString=hayes+adapter+post
Are we saying the best brakes in the world require a special adapter to clear the caliper and you can’t find the 2 piece olive/inserts in stock
erm, yes, but think of the joy when you finally get it working. 😆
As an aside, I've used Shimano hoses just fine, the banjo is identical, you just have to open up the inner a bit to get the Hayes olive/bard in there. (Hayes hose got ripped out by baggage handlers somewhere between LHR and Glasgow, needed a quick fix in a pinch). Obvs new hoses so as not to mix Mineral and DOT.
I've recently fitted mine, using the magura QM40 and QM44 adapters with a 203mm and 180mm storm rotor. All fits perfectly.
Although I now need to shorten the hoses, and a bit concerned about using the cheap 1 piece ones off ebay as I don't have a new compression nut.
I've emailed Hayes Europe to see if they can supply the correct parts.
How do we get Hotlines to get their thumb out of their arse about brake spares?
Is it up to them what they stock, or does the manufacturer require some minimum standard e.g. listing spares, not recommending incompatible substitutes
My personal experience with the Hayes brakes has been pretty bad so far.
First time around, I bought a secondhand set, which had been removed from a new bike. I needed to shorten the hoses to fit my bike. However, the compression bots were seized. I took them to a bike shop who tried all the tricks to loosen the compression bolts. The bolts were so soft they tops of both just disintegrated, leaving the brake levers unusable.
As a bit of a gluten for punishment, I decided to buy a new set as a replacement. Now that I've tried to shorten the hoses on these, I've found you cannot get official spares for the Olives and Barbs etc., and the third party versions you can find online are of an older (and presumably worse) design. To add insult to injury, the variants of these which I purchased don't work/fit. 🤷♂️
As above, the Olives I purchased don't fit... or I just don't know what I'm doing. The latter is perfectly possible - I've never setup hydraulic brakes before.
I purchased:
• ELVEDES ELV-HY02 OLIVES with INSERTS for HAYES
• ELVEDES ELV-HY01 COMPRESSION Bolts for HAYES
From eBay seller, Pukker Bikes
The Olives don't seem to fit. I *think* the shoulder of the olive is supposed to go over a few mm of the hose? It doesn't. It seems that the hole in the bottom of the olive is not wide enough. As a result, the "mating" between the olive and the hose is not secure and can be pulled out with very little force. This is the same when the hose is inserted into the lever and the compression bolt is tightened - the hose just pulls out / or leaks brake fluid (as I unfortunately discovered).
I'm intrigued if I'm at fault here or the parts are?
I've had a set of calibers out to measure the parts. I'd be grateful if anyone with a working set (originals or 3rd party replacements) could confirm if the parts I've got are of the same dimensions?

Damn I was going to take a punt on these as I’d heard they were amazing but sounds a right Ballache cutting and reattaching them
Is that one piece not a crush olive then?
These are the ones I used
Hayes olive/insert
Not sure what happened to other link.
I found them very easy to use, just make sure you cut the hose straight so it butts up square in the olive/insert. Also used the original hose bolts no problem.
That brass fitting isn't right.
It doesn't look like the ones I bought off ebay. Looks like its been used already
I emailed Hotlines about them stocking the product but not the parts. They said they won't be stocking them and "they all use" the LifeLine hoses that come with the parts ( https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/lifeline-brake-hose-kit/rp-prod209568).
There are no photos of they Hayes hose product variant, but the CRC Q&A answers (by an employee) that it won't work for Dominions due to the thicker hose. Who knows, it might work, but it's not as Hayes intended.
So I have just intiated a return on mine, having never tried them
Which is a shame, because I really liked the looks of them.
It's a shame the shimano ispec adapter is incredibly expensive for what it is, and they only do one for the right hand side. Also, hard to get in the UK. I have an ispec woolftooth dropper remote - and the wolftooth bar clamp is also very expensive. Combine this with the faff of getting discs the correct thickness discs in centre lock and honestly I just didn't want to take a step backwards in everything.
Yes, I know, all about the better brakes. But I do value things that work together well.
The olives thing grates me a bit even though I got spares with mine for shortening the hoses.
Why is the distributor allowed to sell the fancy brakes without selling the parts to support it, and recommend people use some 3rd party lower-grade alternative? Especially as it's brakes.
If I were Hayes I wouldn't be happy with that, from a customer experience perspective just for starters. Manufacturers usually have some disclaimer in fitting instructions about being fitted by a competent mechanic, so I wonder if a bike shop would be willing to fit some cobbled together arrangement like this to a customer's bike.
Evening,
Regardless of the whys and wherefores of product distribution, I received my one piece barb/olives today.
They fit fine and are doing the job for me right now.
I got these ones.
I've also found these at carboncycle.cc, which are the only ones which actually state the size.
Hi, did you use your existing compression nuts? as it was suggested earlier that new ones should be used. Cheers
Not once, in 24 years of riding and spannering, have I ever used a new compression nut when messing with brakes.
I've never had a leak from that location either.
Apparently Hayes are working on a solution to the problematic distribution situation. Read from that what you will.
I think Hayes may be working on a solution, or are at least aware there is an issue.
I contacted Hayes Europe to buy some olives and inserts (after recieving no proper response from Hotlines), they suggested I contacted my distributor, as soon as I mentioned Hotlines, they said they would send me the fittings free of charge.
Long time lurker, first time poster! Any more thoughts on how good these are from people who bought these? I’m a bit concerned by the lack of spare parts availability, but reviews seem to be very positive about the power available.
I’ve got a set coming fitted on the Privateer I’ve just bought but tempted to replace them with my preferred Hopes.
Any idea what a set of these would be worth second hand (but new and unused)? Very difficult to gauge as there’s none up on eBay etc.
Very good, spares situation seems to be improving. I've had mine fitted for 4 years, used them year round with a very lax cleaning regime and have done literally nothing to them apart from change pads. I don't feel that I need to do anything either...... Very fit and forget and feel lovely.
If you don't want them, then maybe we can come to an agreement as I need new brakes for my ht.....
Very good. If you've read the thread, you'll see that Hayes are doing something about the distribution (supply chain stuff, or new distributor, who knows...), and that they send spares out from Germany within days for people that are stuck.
For resale, there'll be fewer people looking for these, but those that are will be keen, and there's not many for sale as I expect anyone that has them wants to keep them. If they're coming fitted to your build, the hoses will presumably have been cut, so depending on the length, a buyer might have to be looking at getting a longer hose from Germany.
Thanks for that.
I’d hoped to done what I usually do and keep a few spares to hand but it looks like I’ll have to get in touch with the European distributor.
Power-wise on par with Hope E4 or better?
Better, near Trickstuff Direttissima level. The leverage ratio is 41.4, Hope Tech3 E4 are 31.4 (V4 35.6).
What rotors are people using? I need 220/200.
I'm using Magura MDR-P floating rotors (2mm thick) on mine, with the sintered pads. Hoping the Uberbike race matrix reappear in stock soon.
Good solution to the barb/llive situation is to use Uberbike fittings as they're all reusable:
https://www.uberbikecomponents.com/category/436/Hydraulic-Replacement-Fittings
Anyone using the Hope 2.3mm rotors?
Next question; has anyone used a SRAM hose instead of the supplied Hayes hose? There have been reports over on EMTB Forums of people experiencing difficulty threading the Hayes hose through the chain stay and frame of the Kenevo SL.
I asked;
Anyone using the Hope 2.3mm rotors?
I got the following reply from Hayes;
We recommend a max thickness of 1.95mm and a min of 1.75mm for best performance.
2.3mm will be a tight squeeze and we would not recommend that. 2.0mm should not be an issue.
Hopefully that information may be of use to someone.
good you are getting replies from Hayes, seems they may be increasing support etc for UK.
Re. your question on hoses, and I may have also answered this (kinda on emtb forums) - not used SRAM, but have used Shimano. Shimano were new hoses, so no mineral oil contamination. Banjo is the same as Hayes, used the above mentioned Hayes shaped olive/barb and a Shimano nut. 6 months and 1500km, no issues.
SRAM banjo was different design. and I didn't want to have to faff with fitting new Banjos as there was enough bodging going on without adding more opportunities for incompetence... 🙂
I'd expect 2mm rotors to scrape for the first few rides. It's tricky to align the calipers even on 1.95mm rotors.
Hayes hose is 5.4mm (SRAM is 4.9mm), it wouldn't fit in the hose clamp on my Pike.
I'm using magura 2mm rotors with no problems . Those grub screws make things far easier to set up. My only slight irk is that when I have to take front wheel out to mount in a fork mount rack it can mess with ailment when wheel is refitted. I use a little wegde to keep pads apart in case I press brakes when loading bike onto rack so might have a look at that.
I bought the hayes D series discs cheap from CRC. They're advertised as 2mm. Not had any problems with them rubbing and they seem to work nicely.
The stock pads are okay, but not really adequate for me. Got som Galfer pros coming which should solve that.
If there's an unbutchered set of these sitting around waiting on a return, I'd be interested in buying them 🙂
So had a weird one today. Had a hose detach itself from the brake lever when I got the bike out the van. Thought user error when fitting the barbs into the hose. Gave the other hose a tug and that detached as well. Got home and took them apart and fitted 2 new barb / olives. These also didn't grip into the hose and could be totally removed by hand. I expect the olives I bought from ebay are too thin to grip into the hoses.
So next step. Get in touch with hayes and try to get proper olives etc?? Or is there a supply in the UK. I can bang my old brakes back on but I really liked these.
Did you do the nut up enough to deform the olive?
Ye I'm pretty positive. But the even if not the barb seems too thin. Can be inserted and pulled out pretty easily by hand.
If the olives were adequately compressed it would have gripped the hose so hard pulling it out by hand would be pretty hard/impossible.
So the question is - are they undersized?
Got any pictures of the used/unused parts?
Ill post up some later when i can. I'm hoping it was user error and i am just being a nugget :0
Hopefully this image works OK. Both the olives were crushed but obviously not enough to grip the hose properly. Good chance I didn't to them up properly. Never had this issue with brakes before and I have fitted loads.

What adaptors are folks using for a 220mm front disk? I've found out tonight that the Magura adaptor (QM45) fouls the caliper.
If anyone is on the fence with these and want to sell them on i would really like a second set for my hardtail.
Thanks all
Update, stock rear pads gone after 50 hours may have got a few more hours but was in Dunkeld and didn't want the hassle of changing pads on the trail. Did start mucking about with the modulation by unscrewing the one under the lever to get them a bit more like my Guide re (RSC lever) due to locking up wheels more often due to increased power. Then sort of got used to the power and screwed them all the way back in as they were when they arrived.
Front catches a bit due to taking front wheel out to putting in bike rack but otherwise all good.
What pads are you lot running ??
Need to look at some longer lasting ones.
The black semi-organic ones do indeed not last very long. The bronze Hayes sintered T100 last longer, provide even more stopping power, but take a **** load of bedding in and howl a bit when hot.
They are also quite pricey.
Been using Galfer Greens, which are pretty damn good. For cheap, the nukeproof ones are OK.
Theres not an especially wide choice after market. I'm 2/3rds through the black semi organics whilst waiting for my Galfer greens to arrive. I have some standard Galfer's as a back up, but what I really want is Uber bike or Galfer to make some Ebike compound pads for them, because I find the existing a bit weak at my weight. Unfortunately, neither do presently.
EDIT - Now I've reminded myself and looked again, BikeInn have Galfer ebike pads, if anyone is after them.
Is anyone using one of the Peacemaker clamps with I-Spec EV shifters? Do the clamps work well?
I believe they were initially only compatible with earlier I-Spec I/II shifters, so I'm interested in how well they work with the EV spec stuff.
I effectively had the same problem as @mactheknife. The generic olives I purchased on eBay didn't fit properly. I noticed the issue due to one of the brakes leaking. When I gave the other a fairly gentle tug, it completely detached too.
I concluded the issue was with the Olives, which are not the same dimensions as the official parts from Hayes.
I reached out to Hayes support, highlighting that there were no UK based retailers where you could purchase the official Olives. They kindly sent me a couple of service kits.
- Insert and Olive 2-Pack: part no. 98-39471
- Brake hose with banjo kit: part no. 98-36138-K001
If you search on these part numbers, you can find a few European sellers, and Mech Monkey in UK seem to have them in stock 🙌
Is anyone using one of the Peacemaker clamps with I-Spec EV shifters? Do the clamps work well?
I just got one attached to a bike I bought. Appears to work very well with the I-Spec EV shifter, shame they don’t make one for the left to fit my dropper lever to. I know it has a fair bit of left/right adjustment but can’t remember if/how much rotational adjustment there was. How you get on with one will depend on where you like your shifter in relation to the brakes though.
I have just bought a Formula clamp (which I am hoping will fit the Hayes brakes) for my dropper lever, may fit it this evening. I like the tidyness of everything on one clamp, I wasn’t actually having a clash with separate clamps.
