How would this compare to my 2010 zesty?

I am pretty sure your frame was 1 1/8" non tapered so this would be one benefit of upgrading. It's also bolt thru at the rear.

Thanks Martin, just wondered if the more modern geometry would make it a little more "chuckable". I really shouldn't even be looking!

Not a 'chuckable' bike IMO, though I did swap it for a Bandit 26 which most certainly is.

Anyone else using this thread as reassurance that there's still life in the old (26") dog yet?! I am.

Should be fine with a 150mm fork, I have a pair of Magura Thor T150s on them, still climbs fine & doesn't seem to upset the geo too much. If I didn't already have one I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

Dont dither though. Years ago wiggle was knocking out the purple 55RCT ti forks for £400. Loads off here bought them but I dithered.

And lost out.

Damn it, I've snapped. Bought a medium/18", hoping I got the right size... I'm 5'11 and a bit, currently ride a 17.5 Cotic Soul. I compared the geometry and they look roughly similar,m. Fingers crossed!
Quite excited, though will have to save hard to get a new rear wheel and dropper post 🙂

If a 2010 Zesty isn't tapered (can't remembered when they changed) then it is 44mm which will take a tapered fork.

Out of the box, first impression is 'oooooo, that's nice!'

Same here. Think it's definitely going to need an external lower headset due to the cable routing.

Just had a £500 tax rebate. However I wasn't too keen on the look I got off swmbo when I suggested I'd quite like one of these. Please tell me they're rubbish.

What headsets are people fitting, I'll be running straight 1 1/8 forks.

Think the consensus here is that an external lower cup is best to stop the fork crown smashing the down tube.
I'm planning a Hope lower cup H with the 1 1/8 to 1.5 crown race adapter and an Hope 2 internal top cup.
Info here

Someone please shout if this is nonsense!

The cheap option is the Nukeproof

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/nukeproof-warhead-44iess-headset-2014/rp-prod85842

The Hope option (twice the cost) with the adapter is probably the more future proof option if you see a tapered fork / another 44mm headtube frame in your future.

I used a superstar integrato headset for my 1 1/8th revs (150mm) it was quite cheap at around £30

Would it be fairly ridiculous to angleset from the outset? Any views on this from those that have ridden one?

I was also contemplating an angleset to take a degree off the headangle but don't really want to drop the bb height. Maybe if I was fitting 150mm forks, but as I'm putting 140s on, as it was designed for I'll most likely put a normal headset in.

I've bought the Nukeproof 44IESS for mine. It arrived today and seems good, especially for £27. Only had CK headsets for the last 15 years so time will tell.

Headsets - I went with one of these for 11.99 from china....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331387705891

It's a Neco H151S. You can specify an option for a straight steerer lower crown race. They have the shortest stack height of any ZS44/28.6 | EC44/39.8 I came across at 20.2mm.

Would this work with some (1-1/8" straight) dual position air Revelations at 150mm ?
and what headset would I need ?
Is there an integral Hope one that would work (Only because I have an inset Hope HS on the Brodie) as I`m thinking of just swapping the front end between HT and FS bikes ??

yes, would be fine.

The nukeproof headset folk are on about above would work, as would the one I linked to from china if you request for a 1.1/8" crown race.

Hope top cup number 2 and bottom cup B (which goes internal to the frame) would work for you and actually compensate for your slightly longer travel.

Mine arrived, all built up (Nukeproof headset, 1 1/8" forks) and test ride today. Its great! cheers for the heads up OP.

It looks a bit tight for internal lower cup to me, but i didn't give it a proper check or anything i'm afraid. I can try and measure when i've got more time.

It looks a bit tight for internal lower cup to me,

Should be fine, i use the Nukeproof internal headset on a 44mm headtube with straight steerer forks....bike is a Ragley but the forward offset on most forks mean that even when you fully twist them round towards the frame the forward offset means they dont foul the downtube.

Other bikes may be different but i cant imagine a scenario out riding where i would suddenly need to turn my bars to 90 degrees?!....as this is what's required to hit the fork crown on the downtube if they do foul on your bike!

(exceptions for gnarlyrad dudes who twist their bars left and right while airborne over jumps....but that isnt me or 90% of the people i've ever seen riding!)

No, it wont - that's for 49mm internal headtubes, the grapil is 44.

CRC are out of the correct Nukeproof headset. Other places have stock:-

http://www.springsandthingscycles.co.uk/components-c20/controls-c97/headsets-c42/nukeproof-nukeproof-warhead-44iets-1-1-8-1-5-headset-p973

Alternatives are uberbike:-

http://www.uberbikecomponents.com/view-product/Uberbike-15-Headtube-Tapered-Fork-Headset-Stainless-Steel-Bearings-Black

or Hope, number 2 top cap and B bottom cap

or the cheap chinese one i linked to above.

Should be fine,

until you crash and put a massive ding in the downtube. Or the bars/forks swing round in the work stand and do the same.

EDIT - beaten to it!

Nukeproof

Tapered forks in a 44mm headtube require the Nukeproof 44IETS

The 44 is for 44mm headtubes, the 'I' is for an internal top cup (to keep stack height down, the 'E' is an external bottom cup (i believe this is your only option for tapered forks in a 44mm tube anyway) and the 'TS' means Tapered Steerer.

The Nukeproof coding is dead simple once you get your head around it!

This is what you want, its out of stock with CRC:

http://www.springsandthingscycles.co.uk/components-c20/controls-c97/headsets-c42/nukeproof-nukeproof-warhead-44iets-1-1-8-1-5-headset-p973

Re. the internal cup option on straight steerers, mine clears the frame fine, the forks can rotate 360 degrees without touching the downtube....i just think internal headsets look neater, if you can do this with the Grapil i'd go down that route but i understand concerns about fouling the frame.

Couldn't resist and clicked 'buy' on Monday from UKBikesdepot, arrived this morning only 2 days later.
Really impressed so far, looks fab and only weighs 6.9 pounds. Bought the small as I like small frames.
It's first outing will be singlespeed.

Oh no, I was holding out as I thought my Chris King Hub couldn't be converted to 12mm axle form a QR. Apparently it can which means my fancy wheels are no longer a reason not to upgrade!

Billy basic question but...I know the website says it can take a 650b with 2.1/2.2 tyre, but that means it's designed around a 26" doesn't it?

Anyone using an internal headset what forks and frame size do you have?
I have a 16" on order and hoping to use my 150mm Sektors with an internal lower cup but sounds like there may be clearance issues.

I am thinking of building one of these up for my son . He's 13 now and not had a full susser before . It's going to be on a tight budget so won't be any carbon or hope parts on it so can anyone hazard an educated guess how much a very cheap build is gonna cost me ? There must be people on here who build bikes from scratch all the time so thanks in advance .

crapjumper, I'm doing exactly the same for my soon to be 13 year old. Bought the frame, got some Fox forks from classifieds for £145. I have all the other bits from his old bike & my spares stash.
I sold his old frame and forks for the costs of the new ones so I've budgeted about £100 for things like new BB, headset, gear cables, maybe grips etc.

I'd think that you should be able to get something half decent together running a 1 x 10 set up for £300 - £350 on top of the frame. Some smart purchases from classifieds, ebay and the usual facebook groups should see you with a nice bike.

I'm just about to pull the trigger on one of these but having last minute doubts on sizing.
6' and a smidgen with 34" inseam and gorilla arms.
Riding an 18" 456 at the moment, setback post with saddle all the way back, wiiiiiide bars and 50mm stem.

Tempted by the 20" grapil for a bit more room on longer rides but don't want it to feel like I'm riding a gate.

What sizes/heights is everyone riding? Any ecommendations? (I know it's not particularly scientific...)

i'm exactly the same and come from the same bike. I went 20" after advice from here and the shop and the feeling that the 456 was a little small sometimes.

grapil will be run with 60mm stem and 780 bars in a fun blast and enduro race bike rather than all day epic way.

How are folks routing their rear brake? Anyone passing the hose through the bridge near pivot on chain stay? Or passing around on outside?
