You can set a breadcrumb trail. Won't give you turn by turn like a SATNAV, but will tell you when you're off course from your plotted route.

Yeah, this is what I do with mine - follow a breadcrumb trail.
Doesn't work very well if plotted using Garmin Connect. I use gpsies.com and under options set it to evenly space the data points.
If I don't do that, then the trail randomly disappears for minutes at a time.

Also think there's a software update that allows 1 second sampling for the GPS, rather than the smart version. Better for MTB anyway
