At £300 a set ...
https://www.cyclesurgery.com/p/stans-notubes-flow-mk3-27-5-wheelset-R4310078.html

I did once hear a 2nd hand rumour that there were some problems with the rims... from memory something to do with nipples... but I haven't seen these "issues" myself and given the intended use even a D471/D511 can fail from time to time.

Any real substantiated reasons not to buy if someone is looking for a non-boost 28-30 ID wheelset with a HG freehub?

I've got a set of these in 29er flavour.
Very nice wheels, hubs seem excellent quality, nice buzzy freewheel (not Hope loud, but loud enough).
Well built, with good, even spoke tension. I've given them a good thrash over lockdown, and they're still straight as a die.
Pretaped, with decent valves included. They go up tubeless very easily - with a trackpump I'm my case.
Perfect size rims for 2.6 tyres.

Just check them when they arrive... I bought a Stans arch wheelset with boost hubs from the same place and they arrived without valves and hubs weren't boost. Now need to deal with returning them.

What are the hubs like in these? I have DT hubs which I rate. I only really care about freehub longevity.

Not great, broken freehubs, broken axles, cracked hub shells.

Alloy nipples are not great long term either. Not uncommon to see them start failing around 2 years in Scotland.

The 2nd hand info I'd heard was regarding nipples but I didn't know if it was just nipples failing or pulling through the rim. At £300 I can stick some brass nipples on...

Anything specific on the hubs/freehub though?
I've managed not to break a alloy D772 axle... (not entirely known for standing a hammering) but at least part of the reason I need new wheels is I damaged a freehub (Superstar fuel) and its not economic to replace. [also means buying a XD cassette] .. I see the RRP on the Stans hubs is more than I paid for the wheels they are sorta replacing... though I could spring £15 on a steel axle...

I'm 72kg and I'd thought I'd give the wheels with the alloy Novatec to the 35kg kid..

Rims are great but if you’re a bigger fella or ride hard the hubs may be an issue. My mate is on his third rear axle and second freehub body. He is a bit of a unit, About 14st and rides quick but nothing mental. He’s had enough and laced the rear rim onto a hope pro 4 now.

I bought a pair of 29" Boost wheels from there for £129 a couple of months ago and they were totally as described and perhaps the bargain of the century.

Anyone had issues with the Neo rear hub on their wheels? I bought an Arch wheelset after seeing this PSA, recently I've had an annoying creak when pedalling.

Just taken the rear hub in bits to find that the axle is cracked, the plastic ring behind the pawls has popped off so the pawls weren't seated properly and the freehub is damaged.

Have I been unlucky or are these Neo hubs just poor?

Neo hubs are fairly poor. They really aren’t up to UK conditions with lack of sealing etc.

They are just open model hubs with a Stans logo stuck on.

They're not the best - I had a freehub crack on a set

Availability of spares wasn't the best either (and that was before the parts shortages of the last 18 months) - when mine needed a new axle I had to order one from the US

Sold mine after 18 months of use

I've got a brand new spare freehub and I've just ordered a (steel) axle.
Just wondering if I'll have the same issues with the Neo in a few months time or if I should rebuild the wheel with a Hope or DT Swiss hub.

I am big, 29er flow rear rim cracked at many nipples, and the rear neo hub lasted about 2.5months before axle snap, and freehub failure that borked the hub shell. Shite wheel.

On Arches too. Stans used to be great options but that was mostly because the competition was standing still- compared to a DT 5.1 or a Mavic 819 they were awesome. But then the competition woke up and now they've been totally left behind. Shame really
