Made use of the O-O 20% off code and it was only £640, seemed rude not to! Swapped the Vee Missions which didn't get good reviews for Vee8's, which also don't get good reviews but are at least a potential faster summer option. Upgraded it with carbon forks, a set of floaters and a spare mech hanger, and it was still under £800!

I'll probably add some retro 90's drillium and orange rim tape when it arrives.

I think some of the niche boys are struggling at the moment, probably thinking of taking up a new sport. Too many similar off the shelf bikes covering every niche these days.

In here:

http://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/pickenflick-owners-a-question

Not really bothered about the niche-ness of them, I actualy needed a new bike as it's taken 2 weeks to convert my commuter back to an MTB, not really a practical option for a quick night ride! Fatty seemed like a good, extra grippy on roots and mud, fitness boosting option.

Snap!
I got mine last Wednesday.
The Vee8's are really fast on the road, good on gravel and small patches of mud/wet leaves and not really surprisingly, terrible on mud more than an inch deep.
I have already done 160 miles on it, its great fun 🙂

£799

There's another 20% if you use the code in the other thread.

My V8s lasted 300 miles before the side walls ripped. Plus they have a really annoying "self steer" that pulls the handlebars over as they veer off direction - really disconcerting. Sent them back after they ripped.

My order is still showing as waiting to be picked, still hopeful it'll go through. Those horrible looking pink tyres will force me to get back into night riding to avoid embarrassment.

Edit: just as I typed that I got email with the bike's build date so fingers crossed!

..sshhhh,(niche content) not so fat wheels are great on a fatty with 2.4's on. The N S F W's are £119.20 in the tyre bundles they're doing (look at the schwalbe snow/ice tyre package).

I saw those and considered them just for the hub spares and a spare set of 29er rims. But then decided agaisnt it as I've already got too many 29er wheelsets and if the hubs don't last I'll get hopes.

Anyone got real world experience of those pink vee rubber monstrosities? They don't look the best (ignoring the pinkness) as an all round trail tyre.

summer only by the look of them.

if you ride anything with roots don;t use a floater as a front winter tyre - no lateral grip on wet roots at all (great for traction at the back, though, if you don;t mind a bit of a wayward back end on aforesaid roots). I've switched to a Surly Bud up front and it's transformed it as a winter bike.

So that 4.8" Surly Bud will fit in the On One fork OK? Looks like a pretty serious tred on that. Round my way there are some rooty slippy woodland trails and also beaches, so probably need something a bit grippier.

The bud is ~£80 and the floater is £30. So would a Bud / Floater combo be a good choice?

It'll probably be the puffer when I'll see you next, unless you happen to be in the Lakes at Christmas? I think I'm going to try and persevere with what's on it for a bit before changing. I'm out East Lothian way now so those pink things should be alight for the beach if nothing else.

Mrs tomd is very understanding but she might frown if I follow up "I got this bargain fat bike*"

*And spent £160 on tyres.

I've ordered floaters and I'll be riding on fairly typical muddy 'natural' singletrack in Surrey, Hampshire and the Chilterns, so will report back.

I looked up those V-rubber tyres including the missions and they didn't get good reviews, lots of self steering and little traction so I swaped them for the Vee8, which still doesn't get great reviews but at least you'd never expect it to have traction! I'll be avoiding going down the £80 tyre route, if the fatbike niche lasts hopefully more manufacturers will join in and slaes volume will drive prices down.

And spent £160 on tyres.
There is something a little odd about the idea of riding a rigid bike where the tyres cost more to replace than suspension does to service, and probably in a not too disimilar timeframe.

Bud/Floater is good (runnign the bud in an o-o carbon fork).

Front grip is incredible but it rolls really well(ish) too.

I did lose the front end a bit on a ride last sunday - couldn't believe how much dirt it threw up sliding - proper clods of the stuff. I was lucky not to get high sided when it started gripping again!

I thought the "limited edition" and clearance bikes were as is? It didn't give me any options to customise when I clicked the customise button.

If it's possible to swap them for floaters that'd be ace! I might give them a call tomorrow and see what they say.

Not floaters, but there were several options for Vee missions in various colors and Vee8's. I bought floaters separately (abeit 20% off).

the only options the "customise" button gave for tyres were colour (black, white, green, pink). You could have added carbon forks for £100 though (not that I'm idly building a bike or anything...).

The ukstaffcla20 works on the fattie but no other full bike I've tried.

In the interest of science I tried it, works for me on everything I tried. Makes an El Guapo less than the cost of the CCDB shock on CRC!

Just looked at the fatty, it still gives me white/green/pink missions and black Vee8's.

Got my Bikes birthday email... 🙂

Didn't realise you could change tyres but I think i'll stick with the pink.

Anyone got any feelings on the whether its worth having the carbon fork or just leave it cheap&cheerful ?

I switched from a steel fork to on-one carbon on my Puffin.

Weighed exactly half as much (600g v 1200g) and it's made the front end both easier to lift over stuff and much more forgiving when landing drop offs etc.

I'd recommend it as a change.

I have no idea, works on the pickenflick CX1 and the codine, not that I've been debating completely re-filling the shed or anything. It didn't highlight the items in my basket, but it did take 20% of off the total at the bottom.

tomd,
Real world view on the Vees - Yep they are crap especially in mud, They just slip & slide all over the place.

So I went for the wife frowning option. 4.8" 120TPI Bud on the front is amazing.
Who needs suspension ?

I put a Nate on the back (while spending why stop) but I suspect a floater would be pretty good as well, judging by peoples reviews.

@Dazzlingboy, what you got?

A Genesis Caribou (cream coloured, not the new one) and a semi-fat singlespeed hash-up. Mrs DB has had a few shots on the fatbike and was very impressed so picking up an on-one fatty (black tyres ftw) at £640 has ticked the Xmas list box big style.

Plus too many other bikes that don't get ridden enough.

I'm 5ft11 and 99/100ths and was torn between the 18" and 20", went for the 20" as they're all the same standover. Bit worried about the headtube length but was more worried about the top tube being too short.

Apparently closer to 31 lb if you go tubeless and drill the rims which doesn't sound so bad.

I'm basing my wanting on it looking so bad and inappropriate that it can't not be good seeing as whenever I ride bikes I really want I end up hating them.

Ive gone from thinking they look like a pretentious ****tty niche to being an absolute hoot to ride, lost count of how often Ive built the bike (back V8s and carbon forks) and had to step away....drinking Leffe whilst surfing could be a bad idea!

Leffe doesn't seem very 'fat', have you considered a cross bike for something more Belgian? Could we apportion bike choice by drink choice? Why MTB'ers mostly drink bitter?

Leffe doesn't seem very 'fat',

I was drinking it when watching the MK CX race 🙂 and I am also shopping for bits to build some lighter wheels for my CX (just ordered Archetype rims, probably getting novatec hubs).

Theres a whole other thread spin-off, what is the appropriate (alcoholic) drink for
fat
singlespeed
enduro
CX
road

etc etc

anything to distract me from buying a fat bike...

Hmm the slightly secret not quite expired code has a lot to answer for tbh.....

I accidentally got a codeine frame...as well(as you do)..

I always find the sizing great fun, i'm 6'2 but had an 18 fatty and was vhappy with it and have gone for a medium codeine , I like to be all over the bike ..

I'm going for the carbon fatty fork as I do remember landing the last one a tad heavy and thinking 'phuk was that my wrist breaking'... ( I can have the I wonder if the forks gonna snap thoughts instead:-)

Fatty sorta sucks you into riding a bit er full on....

I'm around 5"11 and find a medium frame to work well.

Thanks for posting the code also, carbon forks on their way. 😀

Hacksaw with a fine toothed blade. I'd do it outside to keep the dust out of the shed too.

I use one of those clamp on guides that you put into a vice to get a clean nice cut...Its orrible stuff that carbon fibre dust...

I didn't think the normal fatty frame was terribly heavy tbh considerings its
pretty sturdily built - wheels and tyres are heavy though - the tubes are mentally heavy.
