Not sure what happened to mine. Got the discount applied. Checked out with my bank details etc and my banks own security password check then just got a message saying 'sorry, there appears to be a problem'. Now in my order history it says the oder is processing?

I suspect the offer was genuine and the orders for parts etc will be honoured but they've probably pulled it because of the gift vouchers - they probably only messed that part up!

I suspect they'll only honour the first order, wish I'd thought and put the second one under the girlfriends name. Maybe it'll come back on when they sort out the gift vouchers.

I managed to get one order in for some 700c mudguards and a track pump, for £25.

Just missed out on the second order for a Saris Bones solo, the code actually worked, but i decided to close it down and go through quidco for a bit of extra cashback, then it didn't work.

Promo code: JAN20, £20 off your next purchase of £40 or more

every subsequent order is your 'next' one.. so multiple order should work just as well as singles..

I ordered twice.. if teh second doesnt turn up, the first may as well not turn up either.

fingers crossed.

I spent £60 with Evans I otherwise wouldn't have gone near them with. They should think emselves lucky and honour my order or I'll just continue to "not use them anymore" as I did last time they screwed up.

Hello all, James here from Evans Cycles. As some of you have spotted, the code (which was emailed yesterday to a small group of our customers) is only meant for a single use, and cannot be used on gift vouchers.

A glitch on our website meant that multiple/gift voucher orders were accepted, and when we realised this was happening last night we turned the code off. We'll be in touch with anyone who placed multiple/gift voucher orders to refund them.

Sorry if it's caused any inconvenience
James

I placed one order with the code which went through but received no email confirmation of the order and it appears that the order is pending on your website? Is this just a glitch or should I be contacting customer services?

I think maybe we should just have a rolling PSA thread stickied at the top of the Bike forum because I keep missing them;

At the minute a PSA thread pops up drops down the forum and 2 hours after the offer finishes or all the Stock is gone we get lots of "Thank's for the PSA" posts just rub your nose in it...

A glitch...
is that "glitch" spelt oversight? or Balls-up?

Hmmm, Abuse? is it "Abuse" or just catching an online bike shop out at their own game?

Surely each sale is a unique transaction in it's own right?
If the promo-code is valid for each transaction when it goes through checkout then Evans should honour it, No?

Whatever Evans "Meant" the Promo-code to be used is their own business really, if they put no measures in place to stop themselves being gang raped by the internetz, they can't really blame the customers who just happen to be marginally cleverer than the online-staff at Evans...

I don't really see what difference it makes whether the orders are for the same person or different, apart from saving on the postage costs!
A sale is a sale.

But then I don't run an online bike shop, so what do I know. 🙂

I would have tried as well if I'd seen the thread earlier but half expecting to be knocked back.

I think people just assume that if an order is made and confirmation received, then all is well. CRC recently sent out all the inner tubes bought cheaply as part of a mistake on their part - there was a big thread about it here.

I'm not going to be very happy if my two orders are not honoured. I didn't "abuse" anything. I used a code that was posted up here and I used it in good faith. I wasn't shown any T&Cs when I ordered saying I could only use it once. Evan's cycles computer issues are really not my problem.

Interesting reading for us "Pseudo keyboard/internet/Wikipedia legal experts"
http://www.out-law.com/page-429

Extract below from Evans Cycles T/C

CONTRACT
7. After placing an order, you will receive an email from us acknowledging that we have received your order for the Goods, and the delivery services you have requested from the delivery service provider. Please note that this does not mean that your order has been accepted. Your order constitutes an offer to Evans Cycles to buy Goods. All orders are subject to acceptance by us, and we will confirm such acceptance to you by sending you an email that confirms that the Goods have been dispatched by the delivery service provider (the "Dispatch Confirmation"). The contract between you and Evans Cycles will only be formed when we send you the Dispatch Confirmation.
8.
The contract will relate only to those Goods whose dispatch (by the delivery service provider) we have confirmed in the Dispatch Confirmation. We will not be obliged to supply any other Goods which may have been part of your order until the dispatch of such Goods has been confirmed in a separate Dispatch Confirmation.

CANCELLATION BY EVANS CYCLES
15.
We reserve the right to cancel the contract between us if:

(a) we have insufficient stock to deliver the Goods you have ordered;
(b) the delivery service provider does not deliver to your area
(c) one or more of the Goods you ordered was listed at an incorrect price due to a typographical error or an error in the pricing information received by us from our suppliers; or
(d) we have reason to suspect that there is a risk of a fraudulent transaction.

If we do cancel your contract, we will notify you by email and will re-credit to your account any sum deducted by us (in respect of Goods provided by us, and delivery services provided by the delivery service provider (unless amounts in respect of delivery are refunded directly by the delivery service provider)), from your debit or credit card as soon as possible but in any event within 30 days of your order. We will not be obliged to offer any additional compensation for disappointment suffered.

Hello again all. Just a quick note to say that we'll only be refunding any 2nd/3rd/4th etc. orders using the code - the first order will of course go through (except if it's for gift vouchers).

Hope that makes sense

Cheers
James

Although I expect Evans to not despatch my two orders as it's too much to hope for that I've actually paid about what the goods were worth as opposed to bike prices!

Come on chaps, you must have realised there'd been a mistake allowing multiple purchases at that discount

Why? when you put the code in it came up with a text box outlining the deal; it told you the code expired Jan 8th and couldn't be used on gift vouchers, but said nothing about being single use. Evans can refuse but they screwed up, sending out a non-unique code to a few customers in a world where we have entire sites dedicated to passing on deals, and having a website set up that allowed multiple use of the came code from the same user. Fisher Price My First Retail Website stuff.

Now they've completely pulled the code, does that mean genuine recipients of it who haven't used it yet have missed out, bet that makes them feel valued.

🙄 do get some perspective. missing out on some heavily discounted shiny bits for your bike, so you can ride around in circles in the woods? hardly the end of the world is it?
they made a cock-up, they've gone to the trouble to post here and say they're honouring the first orders placed by individuals, and they're not actually under any obligation to you other than laid out in their T&Cs, which i suspect you will find you agree too when you hit the 'buy' button. just like pretty much every other online vendor out there, since forever.
it's not exactly underhand.

Aye sometimes these "deals" get honoured sometimes they dont- CRC for example honoured their 25% off mistake but I would not have been surprised if they had not.

My view is its a win if they do and no big deal if the mistake is not honoured

Its not like many on here thought it was genuine now is it and their response seems reasonable tbh.

Exactly. And predictably they're bleating about it. I would imagine somewhere in their brain was a thought it was slightly immoral but went ahead regardless.

I'll also be disappointed, some retailers would honour the voucher as an act of good customer service and maintaining a good reputation.

However, it is not the end of the world if it is declined and I can understand their issue if people have made massive numbers of orders. I made two and the third was declined. It also wouldn't stop me ordering from Evans again, that will be done by the higher than average prices. I looked at ordering a cassette and realised I would only save £5 with the offer over buying it from CRC. I'll wait till they have an offer on, I haven't had an email this week so there must be one due to start.

Depends on the losses that would be incurred. There is goodwill, and then there is commercial suicide.

Im guessing a selected few got the email, a budget was set aside for those said emails and the uptake, also guessing the budget doesn't allow for a forum to get there orders in so i tend to agree that at some point the line had to be drawn.

On a side note anyone got a wiggle voucher? need to buy some xt brakes, was going to buy at evans but my code wouldn't work 😛

Looking at the order numbers on my orders, it looks like about 1000 orders were put in between 5 and 7, that would be £20,000 worth of sales (minimum), on what they would usually sell for £40,000! Thats a pretty substantial loss

Agree with Del up there really. And Evans have come on here to explain themselves which they didn't need to do. Looking forward to receiving my rear light I don't *really* need.
Maybe they will re-introduce the code when they are sorted after New Year for one use only once IT are back in.

1000 orders were put in between 5 and

Good work guys!

It's not really a loss though as most of those orders wouldn't be made. It just depends on the cost price of the items ordered. Also, many of the orders are likely to be for over the minimum amount.

And Evans have come on here to explain themselves which they didn't need to do.

Kinda important for damage limitation!

Well, I know roughly what best trade is on the items I bought, and I'm pretty sure I know whether they made a profit or loss on my £41.02 minus discount(with free shipping) order 😈

Poor Evans, My Heart bleeds for them...

And people are still being mean even after they went to all the trouble of posting a polite '****-Off' on an internet forum to all those who saw fit to exploit their cock up.

They're a business, they clearly thought they'd tip a few people over the edge from Umming and Arrring to just buying that ~£40 something they didn't really need as it was only going to cost them ~£20, it's stock clearance time folks...
Their own lack of judgement when cobbling together the offer is not the fault of the customers, I say Ream Them!

From above:

CANCELLATION BY EVANS CYCLES
15.
We reserve the right to cancel the contract between us if:

(a) we have insufficient stock to deliver the Goods you have ordered;
(b) the delivery service provider does not deliver to your area
(c) one or more of the Goods you ordered was listed at an incorrect price due to a typographical error or an error in the pricing information received by us from our suppliers; or
(d) we have reason to suspect that there is a risk of a fraudulent transaction...

I assume they're citing either (c) or (d);

It can't be (c) Evans would never under-price an item.

So anyone who used the code for more than one purchase is a fraudster now? Will there be any prosecutions?

If a code was only intended for single use by any customer, could that functionality not be incorporated into the website on a 'once per account' basis?
It should not have gotten as far as people placing and paying for orders if they were just going to cancel them...

Or is it really just a cock-up on Evans part? (Rhetorical question)

I don't understand all this defense of an online outfit, it's hardly like Evans are some sort of benevolent organisation...

Assuming every order used the voucher code, which is unlikely I would think.

do get some perspective

it's a thread about a mail order discount code, were you expecting us to be discussing the Middle East?

I'm not miffed, I didnt even bother following through on my first basket as there was nothing I really wanted/needed let alone make multiple orders, but the fact is Evans made some simple errors and people trying to use a code multiple times (when the presented terms don't restrict it) isn't abuse, it's common sense.

And Evans have come on here to explain themselves which they didn't need to do.

As mudshark says yes they do to limit the bad press from disgruntled customers who had orders cancelled. Evans have a mediocre reputation for customer service as it is so they'd do well to salvage something from this.

If a code was only intended for single use by any customer, could that functionality not be incorporated into the website on a 'once per account' basis?

Pretty basic stuff, every other website manages it.
