PSA - this is a Marathon/offroad Endurance event, not an Enduro.

I wish people would get that right ! One day somebody will turn up with a big rig and goggles, and be very disappointed. Or a hard tail and lycra, and be very scared.

dyfi enduro has been called an enduro since well before the new format was born.
no right or wrong to it really.

Well they have been calling it wrong then. I think Motorbike Enduros may have been there first ?? Not really a new format, just without the engine.

it's not motorbikes though is it?
its mountain bikes and enduro started in this country as marathon type races.

( i am writing this with plenty of this 😀 in case you think i am being a proper nerdy t@@t)

I've seen someone running* triple clamp forks on the Dyfi Enduro and I've ridden it on a hard tail dressed in lycra.

What fools! If only we'd consulted our dictionaries prior to setting off we could have both swapped out* for a more sensible choice of weapon*

*I believe these are the "correct" terms, but am happy to be corrected by someone more in tune with ****y bike mag terminology.

But the name relates to the format, timed stages of a course with connecting stages that are not timed. The vehicle is not part of the definition.

And I think you might find that the UCI agree with me, in fact on the BC website it is billed as "Offroad Endurance".

Or to quote Mrs Cooper - "the cat might have kittens in the oven, doesn't make them biscuits".

It's a lot easier to promote events if people know straight away what they are all about.

Yeah but it's like calling ST james park the sports direct stadium though, it's allways been the dyfi enduro.

oh ok then.

No it's not. People will turn up to the right stadium, whatever they name it. They haven't moved it.

A better analogy would be if the Newcastle United team (or whoever it is) ran out on the pitch at St James/Sports Direct and started chucking a rugby ball around. That is more like what happens when people call events Enduros that are really Offroad Marathons/Endurance.

Does it really matter? It has always been called the Dyfi Enduro and that isn't going to change. It is a great event, I'd recommend it to anyone... but bring thermals!

And if we are being pedantic, then a Marathon is 26.2 miles, so it can't be called that either...

Yes it does matter, as I said, it helps if people understand straight away what the format of an event is before they get there !

What things are called is everything, but then I am a Librarian so do rather specialise in this field.

And I am not being pedantic, I am being right.

It really doesn't matter, at all.

Is there any evidence of anyone actually turning up with "the wrong bike"

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

See definition 2

pe·dan·tic
? ?[puh-dan-tik] Show IPA

adjective
1.
ostentatious in one's learning.

2.
overly concerned with minute details or formalisms, especially in teaching.

Edit: "Is there any evidence of anyone actually turning up with "the wrong bike"

Aside from the unicyclists? 😉
