Iroko £149 sizes M, L and XL - https://www.evanscycles.com/brand/pinnacle/iroko-2020-mountain-bike-frame-913974#colcode=91397401

Ramin £149 size M only - https://www.evanscycles.com/brand/pinnacle/ramin-2020-mountain-bike-frame-913973#colcode=91397301

Might be useful for someone!

Don't buy anything from Evans, they are an absolute horror show of a company! My riding buddy bought a Norco from them 2 years ago, it's had a litany of issues (not caused by his riding style btw) and Evans have been appalling whenever he has taken it in to them.
Avoid at all costs!

Bit ott that response kenburg, not that I'm any great fan, but I'm sure like me there are plenty of people who've bought from Evans both pre & Post Mike Ashley's involvement with no issues whatsoever.

anyone know the geo of a 2020 Iroko? they reckon it'll take a 29er wheel, and 65deg head angle, so I'd guess sub 440 stay and a steepish seat angle, given the updated ramin was similarly slackened (though I can't find the thread where jameso detailed it)

Annyoingly geometrygeeks doesn't have the 2020 geo, only 2017.

I was curious for various numbers but decided to just take the punt for my son's build.

Mine just arrived. Pleasantly surprised, the frame is nice and light, the lime yellow is awesome, good UK things like the seatpost split is at the front, and it came with a headset. Pleased with this.

29 x 1.9 maybe.. The Ramin is B-plus or 29 x 2.5 but the Iroko is 27.5 only.

Would be tempted with a Ramin myself if there were any L left.

Doesn’t jameso of this parish work for Pinnacle?

I left a bit over a year ago.

Just ordered an Iroko and wondered if I could run a 29" fork on it? Hopefully I can as would save me taking one off a 27.5" bike.

I have 2 Pinnacle frames/bikes , An Arkose and Ramin 3+ ... both great bikes and still going strong after years of abuse, although I need a pair of forks for the Arkose as the tyres have took more than the paint off inside the crown ! Shame they none left over to buy 🙁

If they're designed for 130 27.5 forks, that's about 530 a-c iirc, so a 120mm 29 should be ok if you're fitting 27.5 wheels and want to keep similar geo. In theory anyway

@jameso quick question, do you know if it's possible to get hold of mech hangers for the Ramin '20, are they specific to those frames or can they be sourced somewhere other than Evans?

The dropout and hanger weren't specific to Pinnacle, if you look at an Orange or Nukeproof hardtail (not sure of the models) you'll see the same dropout.

Big n daft, thanks, yeah still working on bikes. Opportunity came up elsewhere at the right time to move on from Evans.

Great to hear you're still working in the industry @jameso. Your comments on the Arkose thread must have sold a lot of frames for Evans. Made me go out and buy one.

Their loss and good luck in whatever you're doing now.

Shame the Ramin is M only. I have an older Small, non-boost and would happily update. Great frame, slightly influenced by being a £90 bargain from the classifieds, so another bargain update would be welcome.

@jameso I must have left Evans shortly after you in the great '21 exodus. I wonder if they are going to keep releasing new pinnacle and Hoy models or just splash new paint on them every year until they're obsolete?

@akira Not sure tbh. It might be harder to get changes through but I can't see why they'd let them get as obsolete as Muddy Fox did. One of the Pinnacle + Hoy product management team is still there, he's a good guy who knows what's important. And Hoy kids bikes are pretty future-proof.

I do regret not getting an Arkose before I left, but by the time I was leaving the trade was rubbish and been working in shops so long I can't bring myself to pay nearly full price 😁

@jameso

I don’t suppose you’d be able to advise on internally routing a dropper on a 2019 Iroko? I found a few references to some kind of cable guide kit on the Arkose thread but the links are now dead.

Thanks!

PS - looking forward to seeing whatever you’ve moved on to these days. My 2015 Arkose is still in daily use, though the frameset is the only stock component!

Same here tbh. But I still have a few old Genesis protos from that hoarding mentality and not enough space for them..

@jtdm the spares are long gone it seems but they were stock Yozu inserts so you may find some parts online. There was a bolt-in plate for the upper DT guide port that could take a dropper cable only or a dropper and a side swing FD cable, another for the lower DT exit port and a rubber grommet that took the dropper cable from the DT to the ST.

@jaemso Bought a genesis flyer instead and then changed the wheels, bars, stem, saddle, seatpost, forks and brake levers so I'm sorted now. Once I change the cranks and brakes.....

Flyers are fun, still have 1 of the 2 I had. Kept the one with a 725 frame, Dura-Ace track cranks, posh hubs etc. Black with white bands. A summer evenings bike.

I see the other Pinnacle bikes discounted are mostly at inflated RRPs then 'reduced'. Arkose 4s at over £2k then reduced to the RRP they should be at for the spec. Yet there are a couple of decent discounts among them (Aspen 24 kids bike at £235?) and those frames are really good value for £250, never mind £150.
And FWIW the FLR shoes they have are good - was impressed by that brand, got a couple of pairs and still use them.

I just started building my Iroko but it doesn’t come with covers or gromits for the internal routing, or cable holders for the external (rear mech/brake) routing.

The internal stuff is above in the thread, but not the external holders. Anyone know (cough @jameso cough) know where to get those from?

Iroko is a great frame. I prefer it to even LLS hardtails like the BFE Max, Norco Torrent, Moxie etc. Just such a fun poppy bike when built up and very capable. That price is unbeatable for what the frame is capable of.

Ha! Missed this thread, but have been looking for a more modern geo 29er and ordered a Iroko last Friday. Looks like a good choice... and so cheap.

Picked up my Iroko today in large. Weighs 4.6lb (just over 2kg) which is pretty good. Came with headset, axle, but no cable guides so ordered them from Wiggle.
Has threaded BB, which may mean I’ll have trouble finding a BB (did last time I needed one!) Short stem will be my other expense, having a frame that fits me properly! Gonna be interesting to build up 😀

For those who have ordered a Iroko how is the rear tyre clearance when running a 29er rear?

Ordered one for use as a modern 29er HT replacement for my stolen hardtail so fingers crossed its a goer. Looking to run a 2.35 max 29 in the rear.

Any luck with Evans supplying the frame cable mounts?

TIA

I'm sure I read the 2.4 was the max tyre width for 29. can't find where I saw that though.

Easier to just order some cable mounts (Wiggle, Ebay etc). Can't be arsed with the hassle of trying to get them from Evans

No word yet from Evans re the guides. I can get guides easily enough, it's the gromits on the internal routing I'm more worried about.

I ordered some Nukeproof ones - noticed afterwards there are tons of options on ebay. So if they don't fit, I'll go there (or just get some Sugru and make my own.)

Here's a 29er x 2.4 tyre in me frame. Not the widest rims (old Stans Flow), but enough clearance.

These are a perfect fit for the top tube. Had to get the triple guides (might get away with the singles, wasn't sure), but they're hidden underneath, so it won't notice 🙂

I had the same experience of having to take a photo of missing items. Any joy in the end for getting the correct grommets / guides?

Evans customer service was useless. They told me to order some off Amazon. They couldn't even tell me which ones nor cared about finding out.

Nice frame though...

I'm interested in getting one of these for my daughter, she's 12 and 170cm and I suspect she's still got a bit of growing left. She was riding my friends M Whyte 901 yesterday and it looked the right size for her. The M 2019 901 has the same reach as the L 2017 Iroko. (according to geometrygeeks.bike) the 2020 Iroko is meant to be slightly longer so the L might be good for a bit more growth.
Also, I'd be looking to build it up with 120mm 29 fork (Fox 32), then either run a mullet set up (2.6) or 29 rear (2.4). Was a bit worried about raised BB height going full 29.
Anyone got any thoughts/suggestions about either?

The reach (literal, rather than geometry) will be far too much on a large frame for someone 170cm. Would be very unwieldy til such time as she grew into it.

Hoping I didn't give @hopefiendboy a bum steer (^^ up there) regarding the 29er tyre size in the rear. Had the bike upside down and didn't notice how close my tyre was to the seat tube. ie. very

Ahahaaaa. Yes, I ordered the frame and the seat tube clearance was terrible so I sent it back. Evans was unhelpful with the frame specific fittings too. Cost be 20 quid in.postage 😞

Correct ^ It's a 650B frame, you won't get a 29 tyre in there. Gravel / 700C commuter tyre maybe.

@desperatebicycle

how close is close?

I recall my first fisher 29er was pretty tight to the seat tube, maybe 4-5mm clearance with a 2.25, but it was designed for 2.1

My tyre was the one in the background of my photo, a Goodyear Peak 2.3, which is pretty-much a semi-slick and was probably 3mm from the seat tube. So you would get one in there, but choice is limited.

Description on Evans' is slightly misleading "Typically designed for 27.5" wheels, this frame also has clearance for 29" wheels"... Wheels. Just not tyres, obv. 🙂

^ Don't know where that came from. It has a 425mm rear end and a straight seat tube that's not that steep by today's std. ~740mm OD tyre would contact the seat tube and a 29" wheel is about that or more. 27.5 x 2.6 will fit from what I remember being tried out on the frame.

Thanks for all the advice above.

I've gone with a mullet build in the end, 27.5 (2.6) on the back and 29 (2.35) on the front with a 120mm 29 fork, seems to be pretty well balanced and doesn't look obvious. Build has come in at 13kg, Size M fits my 170cm 12yr old perfectly with hopefully a bit of space to grow, she's well happy with it.
My pal who's a very good rider and the right size (I'm a bit big at 6'3") had a razz on it yesterday and was vey impressed and didn't think the geometry was compromised as a mullet for climbing.

Similar to mine. Odd wheels, old Fox 32s (mine are white). I bought some of those £30 cranks from Ebay. I've ridden it twice then injured myself, but it felt pretty good.

Looks great that..

A 120mm 29er is a good swap for a 140mm 650B front end. Forks pretty much the same length. You get a good amount more trail / stability from the larger f wheel but the angles don't slacken + BB doesn't raise as much as if you got that same trail increase by keeping the 650 f wheel and adding a longer fork only. Maybe I missed them on here but I'm suprised there don't seem to be more mulleted 650B HTs around.

Really capable frame. For the price of the frame and the performance it is hard to beat. Build a really nice spec'd unit with advent x, RS 35s, NP wheels for small money.

Did anyone find grommits for the dropper routing, or is everyone leaving them open? My son's build doesn't have a dropper yet, my backup plan is a sugru plug.
