So what’s the difference between 3c maxterra which I have this tyre in already but is out of stock, and 3c triple compound?

edit I thought the options were maxxterra and maxxgrip both of which are 3c triple compound? This is just CRC poor labelling isn’t it?

Not sure... I checked the maxxis site to see if I could make sense of it but no joy.

The one I have is a white logo one from merlin which says 3c maxxgrip so I'm guessing it will be the same as that.  I think maxxterra is the grippier one but not sure.

Yes, it certainly is!

The picture shows maxxgrip. Think I’ll order one and see what comes. If it’s maxxterra it can go on the back if it’s maxxgrip I’ll try it on the front… do we rate dhr2 as a front tyre?

I use mine on the front for sheff/peaks duties and it's great. I think it's widely used as a front.

MaxxGrip is softer/grippier. Both are 3c (triple compound) as opposed to the cheaper dual compound versions.

Id guess this is MaxxTerra, just CRC not labelling well. Theyre a great front tyre, I prefer a MaxxGrip front and MaxxTerra rear...

It's max terra not maxx grip

There is also the 27.5 available for just over 30 in not wt 2.3 variety

There is also the dhf maxxgrip 2.5 wt for the same

There's both an exo 3c maxxterra and maxxgrip wt dhr2 and the website just doesn't tell you which it is, the pic is of a maxxgrip but it also looks like it's a dh carcass.

TBH they're both good tyres and both worth £30 without a doubt but the maxxgrip is the absolute bollocks on the front imo, it's not that much slower rolling than the maxxterra but the increase in grip in the wet especially on rocks is fantastic. Absolutely love mine. Only downside is they wear pretty fast. Maxxterra is a perfectly good trailbike tyre on the front too, it's just that the tradeoff for the maxxgrip is pretty small so I'd always rather have it.

Dual compound is better on the back imo, the extra grip of maxxterra there doesn't really make a lot of difference ime but the drag definitely does. I've been using an exo+ with maxxterra on the back just because I could never find an exo+ dual, not sure they exist. And it's fine, it's just not as completely bloody awesome as the front options.

Looks to be MaxxTerra going by the description. Ordered, and secretly hoping it’s an OEM tyre with the white logo to match the DHF I’ve got up front.

Blimey they really need to get these filters fixed. They are showing over 500 tyres, how do I find all the 29 ones in stock? It's not possible is it?

Anyone received this tyre from CRC and can confirm the specs?

My preference is always to run the same tyre front and rear and put new tyres on the front, moving the part worn front to the back wheel. If you run the f and r specific the rear inevitably wears quickest and on the Maxxis 3C tyres the side knobs seem to tear off the harder layer underneath. But they don't make the harder wearing dual compound tyres in modern widths.

Conti are the same with their new tyres - the perfect rear would seem an enduro casing but endurance (rather than soft) tread. Not something they sell. (but since Conti's are all one compound I find they wear more evenly and less issue tearing off the knobs.

But at that price...

Yeah that's annoying when the grip and carcass go up and down together, I want light and sticky on the front and tough and fast on the back and that basically needs a really massive tyre range.

The newest contis aren't all the same compound btw, they come in an supersoft, soft and endurance compound. But yeah that's what I want, a kryptotal rear in endurance rubber, enduro carcass

For what it's worth, the new conti tyres in the soft/enduro casing are lasting well for me. Lots of miles on them in the Whistler bike park and Surry hills; they look a lot better than my mates tyres (maxxis & schwalbe in similar 'soft' compounds) after the same amount of riding. Thanks OP for the PSA, DHR on order for the front of the trail bike.

That's what pretty much everyone I've seen comment on those tyres has said they want. So I'm surprised it Conti haven't picked up on it. Surely everyone except people who aren't paying for their own tyres (ie racers who are getting new tyres for every race) would prefer a tyre on the rear that has a longer life and everyone who isn't riding at near pro level would benefit from a grippier lighter tyre on the front (I've pinch flatted rear wheels countless times but the only place in can remember doing the front is on water bars on the borrowdale bash.)

It's a pretty hard thing to pull off really, you need a lot more tyres in the range, retailers who'll carry them, all that good stuff- and conti can't seem to keep the mainline tyres in stock.

Looking at the current Kryptotal range.

6 variants in each casing (2 fronts, 4 rears), total of 18 variants.

The two extra rear variants are 2.6 ones in Trail and Endurance, and a harder (Soft rather than Supersoft) ones in DH. So the latter is precedence for a rear in harder compound.

I'd guess many people would be pleased to see just a Trail Soft Front and Enduro Endurance Rear, in 29 x 2.4 only. That's two extra variants, three if they cater for mullets. Realistically they aren't sizist so four to do a front 27.5 too.
