In my Tescos doing a swift shop and see some cillit bang grease and grime for £1.50

Had a look on the back of the bottle and it specifically mentions its use as a degreaser for bicyles!

certainly a lot cheaper than bike specific degreasers, but probably not as good for your garden when its rinsed off.

Barry Scott 100% endorsed

I know someone who used Mr Muscle oven cleaner on his chainset. It got rid of the grease/muck and the anodising...

From the Cillit Bang website

On what surfaces can I not use Cillit Bang Power Cleaner Bleach & Hygiene?
Cillit Bang Power Cleaner Bleach & Hygiene should not be used on: Clothes, textiles, carpets, wood, rubber, vinyl, painted or paper surfaces, aluminium, brass and copper. If used on metal, please immediately thoroughly wash off with water. Longer periods of contact with rust-free stainless steel, chrome, old porcelain, plastic laminate and marble can cause discolouration.

What surfaces should Cillit Bang Grease & Floor not be used on?
Glass ceramic surfaces, aluminium, copper, brass, wooden surfaces, hot and damaged surfaces.

So, don't get it anywhere near your bikes!

You'll be fine, just jet-wash it off afterwards. 😉

I use it for cleaning the moss off our stone driveway. Something it does in seconds. I wouldn't put it within a 100 yards of my bike. It would probably dissolve it!

Piedi, you've quoted the wrong product!

Its cillit band "grease and grime" - no bleach in this one!

Bleach attachs chrome in stainless steel, everything else is probably equaly aplicable. I'd not put it anywhere near my bike!

On a side note, I once had abottle of fenwicks dissolve through the bottle, then through the masonry paint and concreet underneeth!

Now just use turtlewax or equaly cheep car shampoo.

Traffic film remover diluted for me, looks, smells and works just like expensive bike cleaning products.

We're having our jet wash upgraded at work so I'll need to dispose of our stocks in a sensible environmentally friendly manner as the new ones don't use it. 😀

I washed my hands with Cillit Bang once after getting them all grimy from working on bikes ... lesson learned, I've no idea what possessed me to do it.

Can't say I'd want the stuff anywhere near the bike or garden.

OK, so how much do you get in your £1.50 bottle?
A litre of diesel is, what, £1.45?
And diesel is the best degreaser you'll ever get your hands on. 🙂

750ml in a trigger spray bottle, and more importantly you dont stink like a garage forecourt 🙂

edit: do you use diesel as a spray? or just for dipping/soaking?

Starbrite is excellent - we use it on the kitchen tiles.

If you want to see a good reason why not to use Cillit Bang on your bike, drop a couple of very dirty copper coins in a bowl and spray some on them. Within no time they are shiny like new - I assume it's very acidic or corrosive or both.

dizcostix probably knows what he's talking about - he spends more time cleaning and polishing his bike than riding!

I take it you don't eat Oranges or Lemons for the same reason?

BANG and the frame finish, any seals, anodising on parts is completely ****ed.

Neat car shampoo is my suggestion. Put it in your chain cleaner (maybe with a couple of squirts of mucoff), use the run off with a brush to scrub cassette, chain set and a bit on the frame. Rinse. Gleaming.

I once used Cif on a set of 17" alloys after trying everything else to remove stubborn brake dust.

Very good if you're planning on a raw finish!

I now stay away from any industrial strength products in the cupboard under the sink.

I meant the rest of the warning was equaly aplicable. I'd not put anything stronger than car shampoo anywhere near my bike. Why would I want to remove the grease? Mud yes, grease and oil, why?

In all fairness thisisnotaspoon it's worth degreasing and re-lubing all drive train parts when they get real bad, which is every 2/3 rides for most of us at the moment...

Hora - yes.

Used a random Cillit Bang product to clean the BBQ. Water is a better degreaser. To say it was s*** is an understatement.

What's wrong with some car shampoo and a bucket of hot water? It's all i've used for the last ten years, and it's magic. And cheap...
