Wait, so you're telling me I can buy a fully built brand new bike straight from the UK dealer with full warranty for just a little over a grand more than I can buy a frame without a shock from the classifieds that I'd have to collect from Scotland?

Seems like a steal...

I feel your pain here.
With this PAS and the Certini one from yesterday I get the feeling my bank balance is about to take a hit!

Jaysus Nora, in absolutely no shape or form do I need one, and I don't even fit them (stupid actual/effective seat angle for an XXL guy with long legs is a disaster), but at that price? sheesh! gorgeous! Someone buy one please, just so I can feel the joy by proxy 👍

Try 60% then it might tempt me to consider vpp again.

To be honest judging from current prices on bikes, previous ownership adds a significant premium over new.

The frame only remains at full price.

Either a massive overstock or some of those components are imminently about to become out of date. Or both.

They’ve been 20% off for months, like the other models. But the current price is very good

Price has been like this for a couple of weeks. I'd likely choose the fox 36 build but they are all nice.

There are so many good prices around at the minute.

I kinda want a new trail bike but also need to join ebike pals at some point so I'm watching a whole bunch of sites and being drawn to various deals 🙁

I was gonna get a new bike next year (replace a 2015 Five), but the current deals got the better of me (Bird Aether 9). They must be selling not much more than cost.

It's 650b, a lot of it has been out of date for years.

their the mullet versions, 650b rear, combine that with slow sales, a massive range, competition, ebikes, and it's the perfect storm,

expect to see a lot of liquidated sram/fox/sc frames on CRC soon (assuming they can afford to buy them)

Think the 5010 is a mullet bike, good prices, always wanted to get a santa cruz, over 20 years at this and never owned one and actually live close to Stif in Winterborne.

Guessing the prices are reflecting that fact the worlds gone into a bit of a recession, we've had a few years of interest free, Cycle to Work, etc and folk are tightening the belts, at the same time a lot of bike companies are back to pre Covid levels of getting stock out, they're not the only large manufacturer who thought the market was bigger than what it is just now, and won't be the last i bet!

I live in Winterbourne so might take a little walk round to Stif tomorrow. I don't need a new bike but I've always struggled knowing the difference between need and want.

Overstocked and nobody wants one.
I had a mk2 for 6 years and while I really enjoyed it, I wouldn’t chose one out of the current line up. Less travel but same weight as a Bronson. Encourages you to push in rougher terrain then can’t back it up.  Only slightly more travel than a Tallboy but built heavier and doesn’t pedal as well.

I’m sure it’s a perfect bike for some people, but I think for most it’s too much of a compromise on way or the other.

I still remember years ago on a riding trip in the States and our guide being amazed at the cost of a Santa Cruz over here . He said it's considered a middling brand nothing special 🤔

I wonder if that's the same for Yeti ? 🤔

Boutique brands , clever marketing, running The Syndicate can't be cheap either.

Maybe it's just an overdue correction of overinflated prices ?

I just can't get really excited about the discounted prices as they're based on silly original prices. Unless you need an "access" price for the brand rather than buy on functionality/spec.

That may have been true a few years back. It probably isn't now. I think sometime folks forget that SC comes with lifetime bearing exchange warranty and the customer support from Jungle and their dealer network is second to none. Yes brands like Giant are cheaper, but d'you want to try and make a warranty claim? And regardless of that they make exceptionally good bikes.

I wonder if that’s the same for Yeti ?

No they are a boutique brand trading off their history almost certainly, and I've fallen for it twice now. 🤣

Yeah SC Customer service makes them 'worth' more than the sum of their parts, same IMO for Specialized and Trek. I'd pay more for that than the equivalent random brand.

i love'd my mk2 cc [bought on CRC in 2017/8] , but not sure i'd go anything but a 29er these days,

love the emerald green hightower, had a play on the tallboy and i'd have one of those..

CRC/wiggle cash flows may prevent the big pallet collection from jungle. add to that it now seems tredz [halfords] stock SC.

are SC going to go high pivot, Trek have gone there on the new slash,  so i guess only time for the other majors

I rode some variety of now 5010 as my only bike from 2012-2021, had 2 Blur TRcs, gen 1 5010 for 3 years, gen 2 5010 for 3 years or thereabouts.

Now have a 150/160mm Stumpjumper Evo setup mullet, absolutely love it.

However I'd happily ride the current 5010, if I could swap my Stumpy for one now at no cost then I probably would, not because there's anything wrong with the Stumpy, but the combination of short stays, low BB, moderately slack head angle, travel, and ground up mixed wheel design on the 5010 is a proper receipe for fun.

The Stumpy is more versatile and a better allrounder, similar to a Hightower. It just depends what you fancy. Some days you want to eat some fruit, veg and meat, balanced diet, get the job done, other days you have an itch only a curry will scratch, even though you know you may well pay for it the day after, you still make the 'wrong' choice because it's boring doing the sensible thing all the time.

Chromag Darko and the new Scor bike reviewed by Pinkbike yesterday are both very similar to the 5010, on paper they don't make sense, but on most trails (and certainly those around Kirklees, Calderdale, Sheffield) these short travel bikes are a riot.

(plus if like me you pretend you're not competitive or have an ego then it's extremely satisfying pumping the shit out of a roller or boosting over a load of rocks to overake your mate on his big enduro bike)

lifetime bearing exchange warranty

I didn't even know about that Nick and that resonates with me in fairness.

What does that entail in practice? Does it mean you can take your SC to a SC dealer if any of the bearing goes and they'll swap it FOC, parts and labour?

No, free bearings... not free labour... like Whyte too. You just take bearings to shop, they give you new ones. Simple, straight forward.

😂 nope, they'll just post you some bearings (about £20 retail worth) FOC.

Even simpler with SC - just fill in the online form and they turn up a few days later.

Have just built up a 160/170mm enduro bike but have to admit I'm feeling like I should have gone for something shorter travel but still with aggressive geometry! Feel like I'll often be over biked and carrying round a load of excess weight for no reason. Still it's fun knowing you can plough through anything though, but a slack trail bike probably would have made more sense for me.

Still can't quite get my head around £3k being considered a bargain for a bike these days though.

OK thanks so the bearing warranty thing is nice to have but not critical in terms of choosing a frame.

I will say build quality  is a big thing and warranty   .  For the money these are very very good buys.

SC warranty is definitely a part of pricing, as is good customer service.

But I don't think they're unique here anymore - e.g. IBIS give you lifetime warranty on recent frames, have good customer service and give out free pivot bushings (they don't use bearings on many frames). Santa Cruz has a UK presence though, so they win there.

Given the latest version of the V10 (which is not yet available to the public) is VPP rather than HP (and they did talk about considering other designs during the update process) then I doubt it.

Seriously considering one of the 'cheap' 5010 GX AXS but I'm right on the overlap size wise between L and XL.

Unfortunately I'll struggle to find a shop where i can swing a leg over so looking for real world experience from owners if possible.

I'm 6" or 183cm with a 32" inside leg. Current bike is a 2017 Whyte T130 in L. Mainly a wheels on the ground type of rider that prefers stability over playfulness. This would lead me to an XL but the reach/stack/toptube sizes are all so far removed from the White that I'm worried i'd be left with a garden gate on wheels!

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks

If you're after a bike with more stability then you'd be better off looking at a Bronson or a Hightower, or something with more travel and a longer chainstay to be honest.

Looks like Large vs XL (in low) is 476 vs 496, wheelbase being 31mm longer. You say you're a tyres on ground rider, the extra reach and wheelbase could work really well for you, if it is a lil too long, shorter stem, diff bars and headset spacers could help bring it back in.

I'm 186 and went from an old large of 465 to a newer XL of 511 and really like it.

I'm 6ft 3 and just went from 515 reach back down to 480. I found the longer bike was great on easier, straighter trails, but if I wasn't paying enough attention to body position it was easy to not weight the front enough and loose grip. It also felt a bit too stuck to ground on all but the fastest trails.

It looks like your whyte is pretty much the same reach as a large 5010 - which I'd say is right for your height too, but there's 10mm more chainstay and about 50mm more wheelbase on the the 5010. Those 2 values alone will make it feel more stable than the Whyte. The XL is around 85mm longer in wheelbase than the Whyte, How much more stability do you want?

It's really down to personal preference and riding style to a degree though - you might love the XL, but my experience is that you can go too far and loose other traits that you value too.

@jamesy01 I am 5ft11 and ride a large after riding a large whyte t130, my friend is 6ft 3 he rides an xl, he is longer in the arms that you.

The large is still a very stretched out bike.  where are you based?

I'm 6'0.5", have a large 5010 v4

I feel it fits, but I havent tried the XL.

However I'd say I prefer playfulness over stability. (I think a jib is a type of sail and can't hold a wheelie if my life depended on it; so I'm not some cool kid, so playful in the sense of tight woodland trails rather than tricks)

@jamesy01 I am the same height as you and I used to have the same Whyte in the same size!!!

I brought a XL Bronson. It was too big and I sold it. The reach was far too long, felt like riding... A gate.

Brough an L instead much, much better.

Thanks for all the input, looks like a large will be the best bet as a lot of my riding is between the trees in the local woods and I have a habit of unweighting the front.

Now...time to go looking for the spare change down the back of the sofa!
