Very nice looking bikes but I remember this review put me off a bit...

Point its nose downhill and the Hugene will make itself heard – literally! If the Hugene were a movie, loud chain slap and rattling cables would be its soundtrack. On rough descents, the Hugene requires a high level of concentration and careful line choice to stay on track. Even with minor impacts, such as rocks and root-carpets, the very stiff front end makes the bike feel twitchy and akin to a pinball machine on wheels. With its stiff components, the cockpit passes on hits and knocks to your body almost unfiltered, requiring extremely fast reactions. Rough trails can be extremely challenging and push you to the limits regardless of your skills. Here, bikes like the Canyon Spectral and Nukeproof Reactor are a lot smoother and more forgiving of mistakes. The excessively wide handlebars pull your weight far over the front end, making the Hugene feel nervous at high speeds and requiring an active and vigilant riding style where not even the extra-long chainstays seem to help.

Depends what kind of bike you want but rattling downhill on chunky trails is kind of my favourite thing.

Tyee owner here, it's ok but I don't love it like I have with other new bikes. My mate has one and adores it, and reviews are glowing so maybe it's just that i've not got mine set up right yet.

There's a couple of owners groups on Facebook, but haven't seen many of the new Hugenes on there.

Cable routing on the Tyee is under the BB so rubs on the tyre. Not sure if Hugene is the same.

Bike was £3,114.73 plus
CUSTOMS V.A.T £743.40
CUSTOMS DUTY £456.47
SHIPPING £175

Ordered 5 Jan with an expected delivery April. Received 26 Aug.

Propain are terrible to deal with. Communications are poor. Do not expect to receive your bike anywhere near the date shown on the website. Spec is likely to get changed.

Delays and issues are inevitable in the current climate, but their customer service is non existent, so it ends up being bad news after multiple chasers rather than them proactively sending updates after missing yet another delivery date.

I never get reviews like that. Honestly, think about it for a second. What could it possible be about the frameset that is to blame in any way for 'such a stiff front end that it makes the bike a twitchy pinball machine'?

Tyres? Aftermarket. Wheels? Aftermarket. Forks? Aftermarket. Cockpit? Aftermarket. Head angle? Identical to probably half the bikes in that review. Bars too wide? Cut them ****ing down - but I bet they were were within 10-20mm of the other bikes on test. Front end too stiff? Remove some HSC sort your sag out and fix your front tyre pressure.

Problem is propain probably didn't slip the reviewer enough of a sweetener (or canyon did).

On the flip side, I reviewed one for this very website, and loved it ( https://singletrackmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/propain-hugene-performance-review-one-bike-to-rule-them-all/).

It's a super fun bike to ride, and I had no complaints with the frame. Not too stiff at all. I can't comment on Propain's customer service though, but if you're after a personal service from a local shop, then maybe direct sale isn't for you.

i never get the 'too stiff' issue either!
I mean, forks and tyres deal with most of the contact/bump absorption issues.

I'd get it if they said "the forks are rubbish and had stiction..."
But blaming the frame??!!

(The exception here is a rigid bike of course where you DO want a bit of give)

I felt this was the biggest risk and is why I ordered a Bird after shopping around.

Ordered 3rd Feb, arrived 10th Feb.

So, uh...yeah.

I was hoping it wasn't a risk! I wanted a Nukeproof but they had no time scale for deliveries so I opted for Propain thinking at least I had a proposed delivery date. Turns out I'd have had a Nukeproof months earlier

Bars too wide? Cut them **** down – but I bet they were were within 10-20mm of the other bikes on test

That made me chuckle. Not sure how that could ever be used to mark a bike down in a review

The reviews on that Enduro site are generally very badly written and conceived, and pretty inconsistent

A very different view to the somewhat ridiculous review from Enduromtb shared above.

EnduroMTB make Steve Jones' Dirt reviews seem almost credible.

It's a shame that the one thing that seems to come up everywhere is the terrible service, as the bikes look lovely

The Pinkbike review is fairly glowing, sounds like a really good bike for those of us with a mix of more normal trails and the odd trip away.

Very nice bike. I should buy one but my impending midlife crisis is screaming at me to buy the DH bike.

In terms of the customer service, i contacted them this week for a warranty claim and got a quick reply from a new UK hub. Very happy to hear this and could be a big step forward.
