I have a problem with my front gear shifter (Shimano rapidfire). If I press the lever to go from the largest chain to the middle chain then it springs right down to the granny ring (ie 2 clicks instead of one). It is not that the tension is incorrect on the cable; if I then click it up one it goes onto the middle ring no problem.
Anyone got any ideas?

<1 year old? warranty
Thanks,. It is 3-4 years old, so I'll have a go at lubricating it.
Warranty on Shimano is actually 2 years with the exception of Dura Ace and XTR which is 3 years. Unfortunately that doesn't help you in this instance. Cleaning it out with some spray cleaner and sticking some light lube may do the trick though.
I tried cleaning and lubricating with WD40 and it did not seem to help. It was a bit scary taking off the casing, but the springy bits inside did not explode, so that was a relief. Maybe after I've used it a few times the WD40 will allow the sticking part to work loose. Otherwise I guess that means it is time to get a new one.
After bouncing around in the woods at the weekend, it is now working about half the time.
